I've been feeling a bit anxious just waiting on these cows to give us some calves. It's just been an especially long winter in many ways and somehow a newborn baby (animals)just offers the promise of Spring and a new fresh season. We've seen some progress (preparing for birthing) with a couple of the cows. I've been checking every couple of hours for the last few days, but nothing indicating today would be the day. I went out at noon and nothing. A 2:30 check surprised me with a calf. Of course I didn't have my muck boots on, so I ran back for those. When I got back out there, I noticed that there were 2 calves. My first thought was twins as one of the cows showing signs is a twin herself. Upon further inspection I realized that this calf isn't a twin, but both twin cows had their calves. Looks to be within a half hour of each other. (Hmmm, hope that makes sense.)
I don't know if we have bulls or heifers, but they look to be healthy.
Sorry to ramble, I just had to share with someone who would understand.

That is fantastic! 2 at once. Wow! I bet that won't happen again. I bet they are so cute. I'm glad all went well. I hope you are able to post pictures. We would love to see some cute little newborn calves. How many more are you waiting on to calve now?
Kansas wants to tell you a funny cow joke. What do you get from a cow after an earthquake? She won't let me tell the answer yet til ya'll guess. She's so silly. (Kansas is my 6 1/2 year old granddaughter who I keep after school.)

What an exciting day. I hope you will post pics of the babies. All babies are so cute.

What breed/breeds do you have, and are you wishing for bulls or heifers, I've got 4 that are due in a couple of weeks, they are black/whiteface, bred to a seminole bull. I am hoping for bull calfs, hate to butcher heifers, but I need to fill the freezer.

Thanks everyone. They are so sweet. We weren't sure if one of the calves was eating, but finally last night we found that both mama cows had teats that had been sucked almost dry. What a relief! My DH went out at 4 a.m. and found both sucking away. We still don't know if we have bulls or heifers, but it doesn't matter. Usually, we want more heifers as they sell. The bulls we end up keeping for our own meat. But, DH said last night he doesn't care if we get all bulls. Well, I'm not sure about that, but as long as they are healthy, I don't care.
Teresa, oh those white faced cows are just so cute - especially those calves. We have Dexters.
Kansas, you have me stumped. In all the excitment last night, I forgot to ask my DH. I'll try to ask when he calls later this morning.

I still have lots of meat from my steer. It's so good. I saw the butcher yesterday and he asked how we liked the beef. I told him we are well pleased with it. I told him about the HB meat being almost pink. But very good and lean. He said it's the breed. Different breeds have different looking meat. He was a red angus. ANd totally grass fed. He also said he's getting in alot of grass fed beef now. Good.
I'll let Kansas tell ya'll the answer when she gets here this afternoon. Keep guessing!

How exciting!! I can hardly wait the two more months until my Jersey cow Mona is due to calve. She is sure wide already!!I just love having a calf around the place for awhile each year.

Teresa, he guessed it! It took someone her age. How cute. She said she saw it on a milk carton at school. He probably did, too.
