Ok......... I told my hubby a week ago I wanted to learn two new things and asked him not to laugh at me. I told him I want to learn how to fish and camp. I received one of those "you've got to be kidding" looks because I am a bug-fearing, AC-loving, comfort person! Ever since I became post menopausal, I have changed the way I look at life, which is a 360o turn for me. I like this change. I'm still afraid of bugs, but I may be willing to make peace with them,(sort of). My parents did not do any of these things with us as children and I'm sorry for that. I feel I really missed out. But now, I think I will have a do over. At 53 years old, I'm not ready to get old. I have a 16 year old brain,(ok...maybe 18). I think I can coerce my body into some of this. Yeah! I'll keep you posted on my adventure. coffeemom (Melody-farm girl #833) |

FYI: I love fishing and camping. I fished as a kid with my parents every summer, and would camp in a cabin. I got my own camper when my daughter was old enough to enjoy the trips and we had a great time. We had taken four trips all together in Florida and the mountains of GA. Keep a healthy fear of bugs and do your research as to what the poisonous kind look like and what to do to protect yourself. Lyme disease is on the rise. I came in contact with a tick on our last trip in 2004 and it ruined my happy life of the trips we used to take. The ticks are so tiny and can get on you and bite and then fall off. Spraying your clothes and shoes the night before with a deet spray is what is recommended to protect against them. I wouldn't want anyone to have the experience I've had so I share.

My husband and I have retired past August bought a camper and are going West to Washington State then north to Alaska. We both like to travel and we both did it as kids. So no matter what changed your mind it is never to late to start to love the great outdoors. Bugs critters ya they are all out there but if you have to start worring about every little thing then one would never have any fun for people can always find somthing wrong. Life is great and I am going to live it until my experiation date. Love Lilly

My sister and I bought a little vintage trailer and redid the inside and went camping every chance we got. We are having to sell it now. Not because we don't enjoy it but because our 82 year old MOm wants to go with us and it is only big enough for 2. So, we have bought a larger camper and still go camping every chance we get Michele

What an inspiration! I've only been camping once and LOVED it. Took my 8 year old last summer with my bestest friend ever. We take our boys on adventures together. I'm aching to buy a trailer big enough for me, and my two boys. I doubt my DH would ever come along and if he did he can sleep in a tent! LOL. Anyway, I'm totally intimidated by the idea of towing and heaven forbid ever backing up!!! with a trailer! Ideally, a little trailer, a little rowboat, a couple of cane-poles for fishing and lots of iced cold rootbeer. Man, what a life!!

Camping - love it! Have always done it - didn't know I was "poor" growing up. I thought everyone went camping for "vacation" - now I know it was just the lucky ones. My DH had never been 'til we got married. I asked for gear for two for a wedding present and was blessed enough to get it. He loves it, too. Maybe not quite as much as I do but... he loves me. Our children (now 14 & 17) love camping as well and look forward to going each summer at least a few times. We still use a tent (I've added an air mattress to the pack now.)
Now, fishing.... have never really done that. But I really want to earn all levels of the "Out There" women merit badge so my DH is going to teach me. I'm even looking forward to it, sorta...) But time spent with him outdoors is always welcome.
Best of luck on your new adventures Melody!
Blessings, staci FG# 973 :o )

Melody . . . you crack me up!!! Go for it girlfriend!!!!
Camping is one of our favorite activities. Didn't do much of that growing up because we had to WORK on the farm and there was never time during camping season. But then we had a "Mrs. Murphy's" and had to haul our water . .
After I got married (a long time ago) we took our kids camping every opportunity we could and did it the backcountry, rustic style. They were darned good campers . . . and our daughter, now an adult, LOVES IT!!!!!!
We bought a used motor home a few years ago . . used it until we got tired of all the expense of insurance, tires, license, repairs and maintenance. Sold it in my family's farm auction, graduated down to a hard-sided pop-up camper. Well, it's great unless it rains and then it leaks something awful. So, we graduated down further back to a tent . . . works for me!!!! That's where we started with our camping experience.
Learned . . the hard way . . to be on the watch for nettles!!! Still love to camp!!!
Wishing you the best on your camping experience!!!! There is NOTHING like the scenery, peace and quiet . . . camp coffee and s'mores!!! CJ
