It's time for every gardener's favorite game, Name That Weed. Any guess on this one?

Well, it looks like something from the mint family to me.

Creeping Charlie! That's what it is...it was (long ago) used as a medicinal herb. I've never done anything but pull it out, though :)

Candy's right...it's related to a mint. It's other names are alehoof, catsfoot and ground ivy. It's a perennial that likes moist ground.

Well, I guess I'm supposed to pull it out but I kinda like the looks of it. ;-) It is on the side of the house that is just a pathway to the front. Right now it is sharing a spot with moss, dock and other scraggly weeds.

What does it smell like? It looks like something else that grows here but I can't think of the name right now. With the purple flowers.

That is Llamium. there are many varieties and even different leave patterns and yes they are related to the mint family. And like the mint are hard to get rid of. Put it in a hanging basket if you like the tiny flowers. That will contain it. Similar to Creeping Charli but NOT. But then again common names are different all over our country. MB

Kind of funny...as I looked at the pic I figured something in the mint family too. But I also thought Marybeth would know what this is, draw her attention to your post. And as I scrolled down the page, guess what! :)

So what's the difference between llamium and ground ivy/creeping charlie? That plant looks like my worst backyard nemesis, which I've always thought was ground ivy. I don't hold out much hope that a positive id will help me eradicate it, but hey, hope springs eternal. Just like the ground ivy.

Well ya know believe it or not I could be wrong. Did I say that out loud. LOL
Ground Ivy does look like your plant and is in the same family as Lamium all related to the mint family. Lamium grows here--everywhere and then some. MB Ground Ivy is Glechoma hederacea. so I guess you get to make the call.

I looked up ground ivy in the Sunset Western Garden book and I thought I had a winner but the book said it has blue flowers and my plant has pink.

I would've guessed mint, too, or something related to mint. I am so sick of winter I would actually WELCOME weeds at this point. Course, talk to me in July...

I found these pictures of ground ivy online. The page also links to a couple of different varieties of lamium. So we can all compare ours with what they show! Looks like the way the roots sprout from the stems as the plant spreads is the key difference.
I think I've got both ground ivy and lamium in my yard...yikes, it's worse than I thought.

Yep, I recognize that pernicious little thing. We call it 'henbit' here. And boy, does it spread. Invasive doesn't do it justice. But at least it comes up fairly easily.

That's cute, Kelly. When I was little, I used to pick dandelions and violets and do the same thing. Used grandma's glass toothpick holder. LOL! They were just weeds to my mom.
