A little 1st grader asked me this yesterday. (I work on the playground at recess at our local school)
She asked me "What kind of games did you play when you were a little girl?"
You should have seen her eyes light up when I told her "I jump roped with friends, roller skated, played tag, hide and seek, had picnics with my friends....."
What games did you play when you were a little girl?

"Hopscotch", "Red Rover", "What Time is it, Mr. Fox?","freeze tag", "Duck, Duck, Grey Duck", "Fox and Goose"(in the snow),"Four Square" (on the playground), Tether Ball, "Work Up"( basically soft ball when we didn't have enough people for teams, we loved "Swinging Double"(one person sat on the seat and another straddled their lap and stood to pump.

I have played just about all of these games and then I also played football, baseball and basketball with my 3 brothers and their friends. Not coordinated enough for bowling or tennis.

In school we played kickball, four square, marbles, Chinese jumprope, and bombardment. At home we played a game called "light tag" that involved long summer evenings and flashlights. I'm sure we played lots of other games but I can't think of them now. cindy

Chinese Jump Rope, pick-up-sticks, red-rover, hide and seek, and some game where you use to jump over poles that were tapped on the ground twice then clicked together once and it went faster and faster. My sister and I can not remember what it was called. When I was younger we played with paper dolls alot. I still have some. Sure miss Betsy McCall.

GI Joe!!! I have two older brothers. Not too long ago I got out my jacks. My kids thought it was pretty cool. I could only pick up four, though. Who knew I was so much more coordinated when I was little?

Flashlight tag. Sort of a hide and seek at night with a flashlight.

We played a great game called Pie Man, which nobody ever seems to recognize when I tell them about it. Does anyone remember that one? |

I have played just about all of these games. But do I ever remember double swinging, you just couldn't get high enough could you! I loved playing hop scotch and played it with grand-daughers. I wasn't to fond of dodge ball. the boys would get to rough, I think! Do you remember running around to catch lightening bugs and then put them on as jewerly! Good old times!!! We need to get todays kids away from the computer more. My grandkids are pretty much outdoors kids even the 20 yr old. Macee is just 10 and goes down the street to play basketball. In the summer there is always a game of some sort going on. Hide and seek, now that was good. Thanks for the memories. As for winter playing my brother and I and all the neighborhood kids got together and built snow forts. We had about 6 of them built connected together. With little doors to go from one to the other. I'll be anxious to hear what our grandkids have memories of someday.
Blessings, Brenda

One thing I didn't play ... dolls! Fox and Goose in the snow was a favorite. I also remember my dad clearing a section of snow off the slough, placed a few straw bales around the edge so we had a spot to sit down and we had a neighborhood ice skating parties that winter. For some reason we only did it one season, but it was a lot of fun. We spent a ton of time playing in the hayloft especially in the winter - swinging on ropes, shooting hoops, and looking for litters of kittens. We were also big card game players especially Pinochle and I loved Scrabble.
Popular Games when we visited Grandma included Spoons and Old Maid.

Hide and seek, freeze tag, kick the can and catching lightning bugs.
Summer growing up in our neighborhood was the best
There were about 5 of us who hung out.
I remember one summer (can';t recall the year exactally, but a niece of a neighbor came to visit from (sp) Peruto Rico and taught us all how to Disco dance. So the rest of that summer was spent listening to records and dancing on top of a picnic table |
