For those who embroider on the front of bags or the back of jackets, what do you do about the working side of the item - where all the knots and such are located? Do you cover that area with some iron on fabric or do you just let it all hang out? When I embroidered my grocery totes and my jean jacket I didn't worry about the underside showing but I'm thinking that I might start selling items and I want it to look at bit more finished.

Hi Kimberly
When I was taught oh so many years ago I was told to work my tail into the piece so there was no knots and both sides of the work could be viewed without anything showing. If you do not wish to do that then I would make lined totes and diffently cover the work on the jackets. Just would look more professional. Just my thoughts - wish you much luck on your new venture.

I'm rather new to embroidery, but on everything I've done I always work the tail into the back stitches and I don't use knots. I have another question about finishing. What is the secret to finishing raw edges neatly with embroidery stitches, such as a blanket stitch on a jar cover? Mine just don't look neat and finished around the edges. Dianne

Dianne, fold the hem over first then cover the edge with blanket stitches making sure that the anchor stitch catches the hem edge. Make sure that your stitches are equally spaced. If you have trouble with that you might try tiger tape. Tiger tape has little lines and is used in quilting.

Oh Sheri I love Tiger Tape - when I want perfection that is where I go...

I do the same with eadges - fold about l/8 of an inch then fold your hem and do your blanket stitch - wonderful finish edge. You can also use other stitches which will give the edge a designer look.. More time but well worth it.
