There is always NPR, we listen to that a lot. We do have TV and watch it with moderation. We like some of the programs we select to watch - one of the biggest problems IMO with network TV are the commercials which are often crass and offensive (i guess that is probably true of much of programing too - particularly the sitcoms UGH).

Thank you for these recommendations HIDez Gal. I may have to upgrade to DSL so I can enjoy these stations at home! It is certainly nice to have more options.

I listen to radio a lot in the car. I love NPR. But, I think part of the appeal would be to be able to *see* not only Mary Jane, but also have a visual of what she was doing and how. Maybe this is my personal quirk, but I learn better when I can see something demonstrated rather than just read or hear about it.
Or, how 'bout both?

 I missed this topic somehow. Anyway, I don't listen to much AM radio, can't stand those talky DJ's. Don't like most of the music, and I can only take so much classical stuff, etc. on FM. I do listen to NPR, Prairie Home Companion, etc. What I do when I have time, is listen to shortwave radio. You can pick up the entire world, and they don't always broadcast in their native languages, many programs and music is in English. In the summer, I can pick up more than in the winter, it has to do with atmospheric conditions but I don't understand the reason. It's really great to listen to overseas news programs, you get an entirely different perspective on the world situation, etc.

WE listen to books on tape alot in the car. Boy, it would be fun to listen to a "how-to" type of book on tape if it were done right!!
We are listening to "Where the Red Fern Grows" right now. Just a thought.

Thought I would revive this topic with some new thoughts of mine. I recently upgraded to a DSL connection at home. This wasn't an easy decision for me, but after weighing the reduced cost for the service vs the ability to be online and have the phone line accessible, thereby needing only one phone line, the cost seemed nominal. HiDezGal recommended a couple stations that are available only online, and I'm now able to listen to those and others like them. What I'm most pleased about too is listening to NPR stations from other areas. This morning I listened to a Spokane station that was featuring environmental shows from Living on Earth and National Geographic. We just don't get those options in our smaller markets. So, I am quite enjoying my new capabilites to reach out into the world beyond my own county. If anyone is considering this switch, I would have to say it has been most positive for me. The speed alone is amazing. Don't have to plan what I can get done while I wait for a web page to load up... but rather, I can plan everything I can get done after I'm done browsing... get on with my life! I may need to upgrade my computer and add more memory soon, but other than that, it's all a plus.
