We have a beautiful show garden here in Alaska. My friends have worked soooo hard making it pretty, but last year the root maggots got into alot of stuff. I'm wondering if its cause of the 'new'compost. It has alot of decomposed manure in it. It's an organic garden so we don't want to use anything harmful.Any suggestions???
We have the same problem here Dorothy. There is an organic solution that supposedly does work, although I have yet to try it. It is a parasitic nematode that the nurseries carry in the spring and it feeds on the root maggots. Apparently you just mix it with water and sprinkle it over your garden. I will probably try it this year, as we have a heck of a time with them in any kind of root vegetable and they will even mow down new lettuce transplants. I've also heard that coffee grounds work, but haven't tried it. Di
Thanks for the info.I'm on the hunt for a solution and will keep everyone informed on what does and does not work! Diane, you're so close, and yet sooo far away.Really want to come to your neck of the woods someday!
