English and enough French to get by although it is Canadian French and I found I "got by" a lot better in Quebec than I did in Paris!

I speak American English, some Australian, and French...I was an exchange student to France after I graduated, and found 3+ years of French in high school was just the basics! Learned sooo much while living there! I should also add that I'd like to learn Spanish, as it would be very helpful to have that knowledge, and I'd enjoy being better able to communicate with others around me. What a very interesting topic...

I speak English, took a few years of Spanish in high school, and know just enough Swedish to get me in trouble.

Hey June, I hope I'm not being rude, but what do you mean by Australian? Do you mean Maori? Other than a specific slang, isn't Australian technically English?
Anyhow, I speak Arabic, Hungarian, and French.

I was wondering if any one caught it I said I speak English & Canandian (most people think Canandians speak french which the ones who live way up north do but most speak engish and end the sentence with Aaa.) Most Hawaiians also speak english and I speak Australian which is also English.

Diane, Canadian IS a different kind of English. Same as Australian, New Zealand and South African. LOVE those accents. I can pick out from which country peeps are when they speak English. A short funny:
A few yrs ago I was in Amsterdam. While browsing in a souvenir shop for a gift to send to an Aussie friend I heard 2 ladies talk.... ( I have an antenna on my head for the English language lol) I just noticed they were from New Zealand and asked where they were from (in N.Z. -been there while living in Aussie so was curious ;) ). They told me they were from Auckland area and wondered HOW I could hear they were from N.Z. I told them I could tell by the way they pronounce the words IT and IS etc. They were astonished I could, because not many peeps seem to be able too, lol. We talked for a while and they asked ME where in Aussie I came from YAY. When I told them I was just a regular Dutchy they didn't wanna believe me hehe
Can't help it but I DO seem to have a knack for picking out English accents

I caught the Canadian EH...lol! Australian is English, yes, but not like our American English. I, too, enjoy all of the different accents and variations in the "English" language! I enjoyed your story, Marian...reminds me of myself, always tuning in when I hear other languages and accents! :-)

I found out when we moved to Scotland that English is not necessarily English. LOL. We sat down with some Scottish friends one night and came up with over 300 words that meant something different in American English than in Scottish English. Then we called over some Welsh friends and discovered even more. It was really fun working on the list.

I have to admit that I speak Southern. And I'm doing good to do that. LOL!

I can read better in Spanish than I speak it. I can sing one little song in Finnish. I had 4 years of Latin in HS but that is long gone as far as speaking is concerned. And I sign in American Sign Language. I haven't used that in a very long time either but I used to be an interpreter for about a year for a student who was profoundly hearing impaired. As with the Spanish/Latin....the less you use it the harder it is to remember. |
