I've made up my mind; I'm building the earthen oven I've been wanting. There, I said it, out loud, to all you farmgirls, so now I'm held to it.

Wish me luck! I'll post a photo or two of my progress.

Have you seen the book, Build Your Own Earth Oven, by Kiko Denzer and Hannah Field? I got a copy at the library and was so entranced I searched out a copy on a used book web site. We hoped to get one done last summer but now are figuring this is the year! Where have you gotten info?

That is such a great idea. We have been considering the option of getting a cookstove and getting rid of our electric stove, but then we don't want to bake bread in the cookstove in the middle of summer. This may just be a great option.

Susan, I did find that book at the library. I also read the article in Mother Earth News (which seems easier than the book version) and there is also an article in July 09 issue of Hobby Farm Home. I have to wait for a dry day here in Washington so I'm in the planning stage right now. I'd like to build it on my patio that's covered by my second story deck, but I'm afraid that might be a bit too close to the house and not be safe. Otherwise, I'll have to build a little roof for it too to keep out the soggy winter weather.

I'm anxiously waiting your progress updates as this is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I have the plans from Harrowsmith magazine and I think it's do-able, just have to find the time. It's on the list!
Will you use clay Kimberly, and if so, where will you source it?

Oh boy. This is one thread I will follow faithfully. I have wanted an out door oven for years for bread and pizza and this is the year we will do it. Our little cabin at the lake has no kitchen and rather than building on to the building, I will finally get my outdoor kitchen, complete with oven. Thanks for the heads up on the book. Will look for it.

I'm so jealous! I can't wait to see your progress! How wonderful would a earthen oven be?!!!! Do you ever watch "Jamie Cooks" on PBS? He has one and the food seems so much more delicious when it's cooked in there.
