I previously posted about our house, and the help I need in my computer/office/sewing room.
Our bathroom upstairs is a wonderful big room, I love it!
However, it was decorated in the 70's!
Apparently, the upstairs in this house, has not been used- before us- since the late 70's!!!!

The bathroom has white walls, icky flat paint, orange indoor-outdoor carpet (I could remove this, there are lovely hardwoods underneath), white tub, shower and sink cabinet. The sink itself is a very ugly orange, and there are orange sheer curtains in the windows.

I was going to remove everything orange except the sink (!!!), put up lace curtains, repaint the walls a cream satin, and throw a huge area rug down.

The orange sink confuses me though- because right now, we are just renting, I can't exactly replace it, but don't want to use any colors that will clash with it.

Anyone have any ideas for me?!!! I would sure appreciate it! :)

Chocolate brown Forest green havest gold use it as the base to the fall colors bathroom. cream paint on the walls. For a small amount you can resurface a sink or replace for $20. to $30. See if the Land lord would just take it off the rent.

Yes, chocolate brown will make it pop the right way. Maybe on the wall??? I would pull up the flooring. Also, lots of white accents and right now, I have a little orange with brown and turquoise to make it pop. Here are some color and style ideas to run with:

Or something more simple:

I would use chocolate brown too. Our house was built in 1969 and the family room (about 1600 sq.ft.) has the ugliest, and I mean the UGLIEST!!! orange, brown, gold and maroon carpet(I am NOT kidding), all done up in a pattern that looks like a bad drug trip! (Really, I don't have issues...) Since we can't afford to re-do the carpet, I painted the walls to match and accented with chocolate brown. Now it looks like we "chose" the carpet! It's still ugly, but livable. When we rented, our landlord let us change things and deduct from the rent...it's worth a try!

I would paint the bathroom a sage green and look for a shower curtain with either a floral with orange and the green or some other pattern, a stripe or an autumn leaf sort of things with both colors. Then Id get some orange towels and some sage green towels and make it seem on purpose. Heck, orange is in again now. Sales after halloween might really be good for coordinating items.

if you look thru decorating mags right now. Orange is a hot color! I agree with the browns. Creams, peach, a little soft aqua would soften the bath or bright oranges, bright turquoise and some purples would look good. Think of the color wheel: what is right beside orange? red and yellow. These are complimentary colors. they will all mix well. If you want a shot of color go for the opposite of the wheel~ directly across from orange is blue and purple. They will make eachother really pop. Have fun with it!

Now see, I knew I could depend on you girls to help me out!!!
I love your ideas!
Oue landlord is great about reimbursing and letting me paint, so that's no problem! I think I will start by painting the walls, I may have to wait until after Christmas for the new shower curtain and throw rugs.
I'll have to take before and after pictures and post them here.

Thanks girls!

I have the paint colors picked out- a soft brown on the bottom 1/3, and cream on the top 2/3 of the walls, curtains are hanging, now have to go look for some material to tie it all together- definitely with some aqua in there. And then, towels and a big area rug!
Thanks girls!

That sounds like a very interesting bathroom! But it sounds really nice too! I feel your pain with the orange sink too, we have a dull pink tub and sink in our house

Claudia, you could make a pink sink and tub look SO CUTE! I have pastel blue, pink and yellow floral right now in my kitchen...ala 1985. That is not cute!

You could do the brown thing too. Think vintage brown and pink polka dots with some rick rack. So cute!

Orange isn't so bad. The sink could be the accent colour for the room, with a light cream or ultra beige, or tan for the walls. Its the wood flooring you need to match the paint with since some woods have more orange, red, brown, yellow. Get some paint squares from the paint store and lay them down on the floor one at a time and see which sample draws which tones from the wood.

Your paint colors sound good. Did you ever think about finding a tiny little dresser and painting it orange like the sink. You could use it to hold bathroom stuff and it would be a real cute accent. I do see that orange is making a comeback, especially the tangerine variety. Good luck, and post some pics.

I feel your pain! I lived with a 70's formica counter in my kitchen for 17 years. I hated every minute I was in there - and I don't care that orange is making a comeback! ICK. I hope you find all your paint and accessory colors to help you love your bathroom.
