This picture is from the mid-50s and the horse is a chestnut bay mare named Ginger. We rode her to school almost every day. . . bareback. All six of us kids went to a 2-room school that was located about a mile from home, by the road, for grades 1-8. Ginger spent ALL day tethered in the barn behind the school . . . built for horses kids rode to school.
This picture shows my brother, Gerry, 6 years older than me, on the back, my younger sister, Gaye Lynn, on the front and me in the middle. We were all carrying lunch buckets and headed off to school.
I'm not sure but I think there was only 1 year when, because of our ages, that the three of us went to school together. We are the youngest 3 of the brood . . . there were 3 older!!!
Good ole' Ginger!!!! Ran across this photo in an album that was my mom's . . . what memories!!!

Sarah, There were several kids who rode horses to school. They just stood in the barn and waited patiently for school to be out so they could take us home. Patient horses!!! CJ

If they put a corral at the kids' school now, someone would throw a pop can at one of them and it would kick the child and then the parents would sue the school which would have to close...

CJ, I have a picture somewhere of my mom and her brother and sister and about 5 neighbor kids on a big long horse back in the 30's. Your picture reminded me of it. That's so cute. Where did you live to have to ride a horse to school?

Kris, I lived right here . . . we built a house on 3 acres of our family farm that my dad deeded to us. The school house building is still standing and has been converted into a residence many, many years ago.
This is a farming/ranching community and when we were growing up there were several little 2-room country schools all around. If you didn't live in town you went to the nearest country school. Walking to school, riding a horse (a bike if you had one) or being driven to school by a parent was the way to get there for all "country" kids. The school I went to was Mildred School and the property bordered the SW corner of our farm. So, if the weather was decent we could take a shortcut across the fields. It was shorter but we also had to walk the flume across the "big ditch" . . .and not fall in. Also had to climb over 2-3 barbed wire fences and tromp through the woods. When we entered 9th grade we all went to the high school in town . . . talk about culture shock!!! None of us country kids were prepared for that!!! And that was a LONG, LONG time ago!!!
Nuttin' like growin' on a farm . . . and riding a horse bareback all your life!!! THANKS FOR READING! CJ

I love your photo's. Since I got horses everyone in my family sends me any old photo's that have horses, mules or donkeys in them. I have photo's of my grandfather's horses. I love getting them.

That is a great photo! I love to watch all the neighbor amish kids go to school, some use bugys, bikes,or just good old horse back. And some of them who know me lean out the bugys and wave!!!! How great it would be if times were that simple again.

Wow, what a great picture--memories of a bygone era. Wish kids could do that today!
