I'm cutting out artificial sweeteners from our food but I'd like to lower the sugar too. Anyone use stevia? Is it ok to bake with it or is it only good for iced tea, etc. Looks like I could grow it as an annual on my deck, which is nice.

I use the packets to sweeten coffee, tea, etc. I don't think it has an aftertaste like the artifical sweeteners. I think it is also sold in loose form in a box for baking purposes. And you can grow it as an annual. I've seen it sold here, but never tried to grow it like that.

Kimberly Ann, I'm going for the same thing myself. I've been researching Stevia and it's uses. I ordered a book called Growing and Using Stevia. It shows how to turn the leaves into powder or how to make a syrup out of them to use for baking, cooking, etc. Not sure how successful I will be, but it certainly couldn't hurt anything to try.
A person is a success if they get up in the morning and get to bed at night and in between does what they want to do. Bob Dylan

I grow it every year, but somehow rarely use it. It is super sweet, & I feel it does have an aftertaste. I prefer agave, or even sun crystals. But I still grow the stevia; it is easy to grow, & fun to grab a leaf or two when you are in the garden for a super sweet munch!
Of course, I am not a big sweets eater, so that may be why it tastes so sweet to me |

I've just recently started using stevia in my beverages and like it so have been looking adding it to my baking. I ran across this website and am thinking of ordering this product but haven't yet. http://nunaturals.com/product/166
Hope others can tell of their experience using stevia. Sounds like it so much better than any of the other sweeteners out there.

I use Stevia all the time. I buy it alcohol free in the liquid form. I stay away from Stevia's with "extras". Not all Stevia products are the same. Just read your labels carefully. Stevia is 400 times sweeter than sugar.
I love the Stevia in my drinks and have baked with it. I don't really notice a big difference in taste. I guess my only advice is if you buy it, read your labels carefully. It is used for many health benefits. Japan is the leading country in volume purchased. They use it for all their diabetics. There is a lot of good information about it on the web.
All things good are possible with a bit of sun, soil, and love. |

Stevia is one of the natural sweetners I use. I too, think it does have an after taste, which doesn't bother me but my husband and kids pick up on it right away.
I understand that the white stuff is really processed and if you're looking for natural/good for you, you are supposed to use the green stuff.
Have any of you ladies been successful using it in baking? I haven't tried because I've heard it doesn't work well.
