use sugar to help to stop the bleeding. regular sugar that you have in your cupboard.

Lisa, keep her away from the other chickens, too. Maybe you could wrap it after you put the sugar on. Try to keep her still so putting her in a small cage would help. I think the less she moves around the less she'll bleed.

I hope she'll be ok soon. What happened?

I have no idea what happened. Yesterday I noticed a few drops of blood, it looked like she pecked her toe...so I cleaned her up and then this am her leg was covered with blood, so we brought her inside and discovered this lump. she has been wrapped up in a beachtowel and in my arms for hours. could it be an ingrown feather? thanks for the sugar idea....Ill get right on it. her comb is turning pale orange...what does that mean?

If she has an abcess, a hot compress will help draw the bacteria to the surface so it can come out. It won't hurt her to try that. Good luck. Our hens are pets too :)

Lisa..if the comb is getting lighter, she's lost a significant amount of blood. I hope you managed to stop the bleeding :(

I am so sorry to report that we lost our dear Brittany at sunset. I had noticed she was no longer standing, and leaning into her water dish, so I went to pick her up, and she was unable to stand. I wrapped her in a blanket and held her until she passed. She was very special to me. The most curious of the bunch, and always watched me and sang, while I worked in the garden. She enjoyed her worms today I gave her from my compost pile... she was very much spoiled. I sure wish I could find out what the heck happened. It was interesting to watch the 2 Great Danes and the cats watching this all come down, they knew. It was very sad.. Thanks for shoulder.

I am sorry about Brittany. I've lost pet birds before (parakeets) and I always feel so subdued for a few days. they can go so quickly and there's nothing you can do about it. (((hugs)))

Thanks sisters! You all are truely wonderful. My heart is still heavy, I couldnt bring myself to go out to the coop this morning....Im really not sure Im cut out for this farm life....I think I blew my shot for getting a cow....hubby says I get too attached...I dont see how anyone could care for these animals, and not connect with them. Thank you all for your kindness....

Lisa, I just joined up yesterday and was looking through the forum and found your entry. Sorry for your loss. I lost a pet chicken last winter. Miss Chicken was her name. She was an escapee from the boiler houses next to us. She was full of personality and wasn't designed to live as long as she did--over 3 years! She was bred to live 8 weeks. Needless to say she was a little hefty. But, always cheerful. It was a shock to find her gone one morning. My guess is she just had a heart attack or something. There was a void there in the coop for a while. She had her own pen and everything. You are cut out for farm life as much as any of us. My hubby says I get attached too much too. But, that just shows we care and are nurturers and probably always will be. Hang in there. You gave your chicken a comforting end and I'm sure the rest of the flock needs their "mother hen" as much as you need them and any of your other kritters right now.

Lisa--oh now don't doubt that most of these lovely farm women do get attached. Some of these animals' personalities are such that you CAN'T ignore them or treat them like "just one of the bunch." My heart goes out to you.

Hugs, so sorry. I'd say that the fact that you got so attached says that you are a great farm girl and perfect candidate for a cow. They love all the attention.

Ah, Lisa. My heart is breaking for you. I know this is a tough thing to go through. I'm so glad you were able to hold her until the last. And I'm proud of you for having such a caring heart.
