Recently there was a large seizure of small animals in the Dallas area. This seizure included 726 hedgehogs, 72 chinchillas, 22 ferrets, 6 pet rats, and 41 prairie dogs among other animals such as reptiles and amphibians. There were around 30,000 small animals altogether. The small mammals are in need of warm items to put in the cages. The Hedgies need something called hedgie hats and the ferret, chinchillas and rats need hammocks. The prairie dogs are probably headed to a release into a secure wild habitat. If you are interested in making any of the hedgie hats or hammocks please e-mail me and I will get you the patterns etc. Also small fleece blankets are needed. These are just small squares of fleece hemmed on the edges. Anything of these that you could make and donate would be appreciated.

Thank you all for your help. All the rescues taking the animals are in the process of being approved. I is a big job and will take time but the rescues are working on getting things done. That many animals take alot of supplies and even more because it is winter. Thanks again. I have sent the patterns for the hedgie hats. Don't know why they call them hats but they do.

Hi Beth
What size blankets, and the hammocks, for a single ferret or multiples?
And what is a hedgehog hat used for?
Thanks, Debbie

The blankets need to be 12 to 18 inches square. The ferret hammocks are better for multiples but they may need a few singles. A Hedge Hog hat isn't really a hat. It is used to line the little igloo shaped houses that they use in the cages for them to sleep. The houses are plastic and they need the warmth of a liner. I don't know why the hedge hog people started calling them hats probably because they look like hats for people.
Thanks Debbie

I finally got time in my studio... made 4 blankets and 3 hedgie hats... hoping to send them out today! (have to walk to the post office, the only car at my disposal is not good on snowy roads, and the roads here are not yet fully cleared, we had about 3 feet within one week, so it may not be till tomorrow, depending on how my day goes...)

Thank you Debbie and Beth, they will be greatly appreciated. They are being disbursed to foster and adoptive homes now. Getting them all set up with cages, blankets, hammocks etc. has been a lot of work and is still ongoing. Thank you so much for your time it is very much appreciated. It will be awhile before they all make it into adoptive homes. Once again thank you.

Beth, we received your package today. The Hedgie folks say the hats are great. Loved the roses. They will be going out to the foster homes tomorrow. Thanks for your time and hard work. The hedgies will really appreciate it.

The Hedgie Hats probably are the most needed. After that blankets are good because they can be turned into hammocks if need be, then sleeping bags. One of the Hedgie ladies stopped by two days ago and was very grateful for the Hedgie Hats she received. She has taken in 16 Hedgies 8 girls and 8 boys. She already had two of her own. All of your efforts have been greatly appreciated.

Debbie,
I can try to do that today or tomorrow. Mine prints a little funny- but the pattern is symettrical, so it should be easy to fix. Unless someone else has a better plan!
I have your address.

Thank you Mary, I am rather technologically challenged and can sent the pattern they sent me but don't know how to enlarge it on the computer. I appreciate you sending her the pattern.
