I just found out that we may be able to have the wood from an old barn on a family member's property. They thought we might be able to use it to build a shop or other outbuilding. I was wondering, though. If you use old wood for a new house, can you seal it with some sort of sealer, just the way it is without painting or anything?

I've seen this barn, and I love the rustic look. I don't want to paint it or anything, but I would want to protect it. I called the local chain home improvement store, and the man there acted like I was nuts for wanting to use old, perfectly good lumber. He kept telling me that siding would be much easier! He finally said he didn't know if this would work or not. So here I am, with another question!

Not only can you use it outside on a shop of something but you can use it to make a beautifull wood floor (we have friend who did this with old lumber)It looks great and if you are into the antique looks it goes great to. There are all sorts of sealers out there that you can use. If it is going outside I would think that you could use any kind a water sealer and if you are planning on putting it inside i would get on the web and do a seach for reclaimed wood flooring or building. I found lots of info on both. I think it is great that you are thinking about "reclaiming" this cool old barn wood for something else. That guy at your hardware store just wanted you to spend money with them and i just bet that if a man had called and asked about it his reaction would have been totally different. (I have build a house with my dear other half and know how the hardware store guys reacted to something i said then reacted totally different to the same thing if Dear other half said it it was even starting to make DOH Mad let alone me) Good luck getting someone a answer your question without looking at you like you are crazy which you are not.

Hi,I think Val was right on with her info.'The lumber yard guy just wanted you to spend money at their store and yes alot of guys treat women that way. My family owns a lumber yard and I have worked there occationally. You can't believe how I'm treated by some of the customers!,at least till they know I might know a little bit about something. It always helps to ask it you don't know something, and get a second opinion if it doesn't settle right.Try to find out what kind of wood it is.There are some good sealers now that are safe for breathing.I wish you luck!

We tore down a 1916 barn and brought home the wood (it was scheduled for demolishon to increase a corn field). We've used the wood for flooring in the kitchen, the kitchen table, the table bench, stereo cabinet and a rocking chair.

My brother-in-law saved a bunch of old wood from the scrap heep. He ended up using like paneling in one of his rooms. It turned out gorgeous. They just stained it with a rustic red and put it up with no sealer. It is a little rough for me, I can't imagine dusting it. However, we liked it so much that we found some old wood for ourselves. We are expecting to use it in the upstairs renovation. In fact we have an old builing that I want to pull down, but save the wood for some unknown project. I don't think your crazy. At least if you are then so am I, and alot of other people I know.

Not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing.

I love things from salvaged wood - it already has that patina that you just can't get new...What a treasure to find! I'm planning on salvaging a couple of older falling-down sheds to make a new chicken coop or other outbuilding, too.

XOXO, Libbie
