Okay well it was frozen! Here in Arkansas it is VERY rare to see extended time periods of below freezing temperatures but we have been there for just a little over a week now. Even got down to single digits several nights recently. Well we walked down to our pond today and it was FROZEN! WE drilled in and the ice was about 4 inches at the edge! It was obvious that it was very thin near the middle of the pond so we only ventured out a few feet onto the ice but we had to just to say we did! It was so cool! Course I grew up in Vermont and we had a pond that we skated on all winter but my husband was born and raised in Arkansas so this was pretty new to him! We were even able to jump up and down on the ice several time before we heard it cracking near the middle and then we RAN back to solid ground! But boy was it cool!

Julie- That is so funny! I can totally see where you are coming from with Arkansas being so warm and all. Today when I was driving over the river I was noticing that the ice on the river here is about two foot deep. Also when you have water freezing sometimes you will hear (and up here this is often) the ice "Cracking" but it is actually the ice continually expanding in the cold. It's kind of creepy and always freaked me out when we would go ice skating on the big lake by our town and you knew you were over the deep water.
Do you think you guys will get much snow?

Julie, here in Ga. we don't get this cold much either. There are several smaller ponds frozen solid here, too. Even some of the bigger ponds are frozen to just about the middle. It's so beautiful with all the neat swirlies. I want to go stand on some ice, too. There's a pond out back of our house. I might go look this afternoon. Sounds like ya'll had fun. And used your heads, too!

Alee I always loved that deep cracking noise when I was a kid. It was so cool.
We got about three inches of snow on Saturday night and about two inches Sunday night. The. On Wednesday we got a dusting and on Friday and Saturday both is flurried for several hours each but was just a dusting on the ground. We are supposed to warm to the 50s mid week though. We shally get another cold spell around the first of February though so we shall see what happens!

Ice fishing is a big sport here in MN. Some friends had gone out to lunch and got in a conversation from some "southerners" passing through. When the subject of ice fishing came up they had never heard of it and thought their legs were being pulled!

Please be very careful on frozen ponds/lakes, every year people die falling thru the ice, weak spots,fractures by previously traveled spots, shifts etc. Unless that ice has been measured and tested by an expert, and deemed safe for "X" amount of weight, YOU are taking a huge risk. Once a crack has started, ANY movement will cause it to fracture and spread, and if you go thru, the chances you will find that hole again before you drown is very slim.

Teresa I was very carful and having grown up in New England I have a lot of experience with ice and spent many years ice fishing with my dad. 4" of ice is considered pleanty thick enough for people to walk on and can actually carry a load of about one ton per every 34 feet of 4" thinckness. The only part of our pond that was below this thickness was the very center and we stayed very far away. I used to do volunteer work for CRREL(Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratoy)at Dartmouth College when I was in high school. Julie, it wasn't so much you I was talking to, but anyone else on this board that WAS NOT experienced. I grew up in Missouri, and we had plenty of frozen ponds, just not all were safe, and I remember a child falling thru iceskateing and her father trying to save her, and both were lost. It is something I will never forget as long as I live.

I live in a cold part of Canada where ice is very common, but I still never get sick of it!
