I don't know if this has been discussed before, or if it would even work, but has anyone here ever bartered for services? What I mean is, I see so many lovely projects that I would love to be able to make for gifts, but I just have no talent in that area. I would barter- or even pay- someone to do these for me sometimes, if I just knew who did that particular craft! ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif) For instance, say I wanted to give someone 6 knit or crocheted dishcloths. I can make them myself(just barely) but it would probably take me months. Maybe one of you could whip them off in just days. It would be worth it to me to have you make them for me! Or, painting. I have no talent in that area at all, but I see such nice, painted projects that I would love to have for myself or give to someone else. What if we had a list of girls who would be willing to make things for other people? Like maybe your name and what you would do, and if you want to barter or prefer being paid? Would this work do you all think? Opinions welcome!!! ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif) ![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)

Brenda, I think it is a great idea . . . I think there is a bit of that going on here and there anyway. I was looking for Scrubbies and found two farmgirls who make them . . . one was a barter, the other cash. So, now I have scrubbies and know where to get more when I'm ready.
Perhaps you could get everyone's "I Can . . .For. . ." list and make it available like the Farmgirl Mailing Address List. That depends on, of course, the kind of response you can get.
Anyway, I think it's a good idea. CJ

Brenda,
I was just thinking about this the other day. Actually, I was going to ask if I could provide some sewing services to someone for a regular supply of home made patchouli and vanilla goat milk soap. Maybe some other fragrances in the future, too.
I agree that it's a great idea!

I think this is a good idea too. I would love to have some of the things the other farm girls make like the goat milk soap etc. I do a lot of sewing and can crochet pretty fast. I think it is a great idea.

This is exactly what bartering is all about. I LOVE bartering!! I do all those "crafty" things and more. My enjoyment is in the creation part of the process. THe second part of the enjoyment comes from sending it out the door to someone else! Believe me, I could never find a place to keep all the things I like to make. It's therapy for me. I know there are others who feel the same way. Getting paid is -ok- but I prefer barter.
I paint, sew, crochet, crafts of many kinds, beaded jewelry, paper crafts of all sorts, make a herbal creations such as salves.

I know just what you mean about crafting being therapy. It helps me keep my sanity, what little I have left. Most everything I make leaves my home once it's done too. I think this is a great idea!

I LOVE this idea, but I just want to caution you...the only time I've been burned was when I agreed to sew come Christmas stockings in exchange for cash...I made the 3 stockings (individual, special for each person), plus a "Farmgirl extra gift" for the woman who ordered them. I sent them off and have heard nothing sense. I've emailed a number of times and there has been no response, and she hasn't posted on the forum since then either. I was angry at first because I was so trusting of the farmgirls. But in retrospect, it really was my fault. I've learned a couple of things...take the time to get to know who you're going to barter with...this woman had only posted two or three times to the forum. Not enough to get to know her and build a bit of a relationship with her, and she hadn't been around the forum long enough to see how things work. I've had a couple of very successful barters since then, and I will continue to barter, but I am cautious!

I've been thinking about this too - being able to exchange skills (like I crochet something and someone else makes a painting for me, that sort of thing). But the thing that worried me was how to handle the supply end of it. If I'm making something as a barter, I have to buy yarn (or whatever) to make it. What if I buy the supplies, make it and then I'm left holding the bag? That's the part I haven't been able to figure out. I don't really want to get into a position where people are sending me cash to buy stuff but I don't want to spend money to make items that in the end aren't bartered or worse, are sent off and then my item isn't received. Sorry to be a negative Nellie here but I'm just tossing out concerns. If we could come up with a good way to handle this, I'd love to participate.

We are listing services in the farmgirl co-op check us out !! You don't have to join to get things from the co-op girls but it would be great to get us all involve. It dosen't list everything we farm girls can make that would take volumes but it can point you in a direction Hope this helps! The only other thing you might try is a specific request for your want...maybe thats what we need - want ads!

Oh love this idea also!! There are so many things you girls make, that are just great!! I am trying to write down everytime I see something on the forum that someone does but if it was all in one place it would help. Toni |

In answer to the "supply" issue. The way I barter is based on what I have in my "stock." If someone wants some things specific with fabric or yarn, they would have to put in extra barter or money for it. I try to keep things fairly general. I have had pretty good luck with bartering on Farmgirls. I think one just needs to be careful. If it was for money, I would have them pay half to order and the other half when they get the items.
I just do it for the fun, really. Some of my favorite barters are for boxes of misc crafting supplies. I always figure that if I can't use it, I can always barter it in another exchange later on.
