DO NOT kick a frozen solid bucket of ice!! Ow! Just bring fresh warm water from the kitchen instead.
Also never kick a cow patty in freezing weather, either. Did that once and nearly broke a toe.
It is alot easier to walk on frozen tundra than on mucky mud. I get things done much faster on frozen mud.
And gather eggs as soon as they are layed or they will freeze.
Don't walk on water that's been poured from frozen buckets onto the driveway, either. Because in 2 minutes it has frozen but still looks like water.
Always carry cell phone when venturing out in the frozen tundra. Who knows when there might be a fall or a broken toe.
Also might need to wear gloves out there. Sounds like a good idea.
And maybe have a blanket attached to self in case of an emergency.
Just a few pointers. I'm learning as I go. There may be more added as the frozen days go by.
Oh, and THE most important of all. DO NOT touch a metal gate with wet hands! Not a good thing at all. That's another reason to carry a cell phone with you at all times. But note that it won't work if BOTH hands are are attached to the gate.

All of it sounds like good advice to me, also, never try to unlatch an iced over gate latch with ungloved fingers, and keep that cell phone in a buttoned breast pocket, sometimes when lying on the ground, on top of the cell phone it is hard to get it out of the jeans pocket.

Did you say you are in GA...is that Georgia? How cold did ya get? I thought it was always warm there....it's hot and humid in the summer
great ideas and notes to self...lol Many of us lived a long time before cell phones were invented or the wireless phone either...or even a phone without a party line...or or ....sorry, got side tracked lol
Did ya ever hear about the author of "He's just not that into you"? He wrote that if a man was really interested in a woman he would call....there are no real excuses. ...in fact the writer says he makes calls accidently in his pocket ..lol Ya just made me think of that.
When going outside for safety sake have the cell phone key lock off...so ya can make a call from your pocket with the one key press!
but don't do like I did one time and accidently call someone who told me later she was yelling HELLO...while she heard us chatting in the background...(I was hoping I wasn't gossiping about her) LOL

Linda, you are too funny! Yes, it is freezing here right now. And will be til next week. In teens at night and 20-30's during the day. That's all they show is one week ahead. I don't want to know what else is coming after that. It is snowing out there right now, too. So yeah, we get cold here. I am right in the corner of Tn. and Al. Very North Ga.
I never knew about pocket calls til a friend called and she had accidentally hit her phone and called me. I was hollering into the phone because I thought it was my DD. I can holler at them. I was so embarrassed when I found out it was her and it was an accident, too.

OH spring can not come soon enough! -5 here this am. Ice heck it is turning to dust here. Makes it a little easier to walk on. Well be thankful it is so cold here my nose starts to run and then it literally freezes. We had one day in the last week that was 30 felt like a heat wave!!! Be careful out there girls. my DH and I were just talking about moving south because of the cold weather here. Doesnt sound much better in the south today!!

Shoot, don't move here. I'm thinking the Sahara desert or Hawaii maybe my next move. I used to want to live in Alaska. Not anymore. I am counting down the days to spring, too. It can't get here soon enough for me. Mt goats wouldn't even come out of the barn today.

Hey Kris, I was in Lewiston today (45 minutes away from my house) and it was 45 degrees and it hasn't gone below 32 in a couple days now. We even had rain on New Year's Eve. We are in MUD mode now. Just had to rub it in a little.

I bet you are one hot mama! Maybe that's a good way to keep warm in the mornings out in the freezing cold. Rub cayenne pepper all over with bagbalm! That's a good one, Sherry. I may have to try that. I do hope it helps the udders, too.

Here is a note to self, I use to live in Alaska, don't go outside in -30 degrees with wet hair. Hair freezes and breaks off when the wind blows or it is touched. Worst hair cut I ever had. Was just going out to feed the dog. She wouldn't come in husky/wolf cross. If it was above freezing it was to hot for her. LOL

I lived for 8 years in Fairbanks, Alaska..and I never went outside with wet anything when it was that cold...
where did ya live there? I still miss it!

Here's a note to self, Kris. Don't try to open a gate attached to electric fencing when standing in a mud puddle. Ouch! I thought DH had already unplugged it, grabbed the metal rod and got a fast lesson in electric fencing. Can you believe this weather we're having, Kris? They're telling us it'll be either 9 or 10 on Saturday. Do you remember the last time it got this cold? And here I am telling folks that we rarely, if ever, get down below 28!

It was -3 here this morning. DH and I were talking about some of the farm girls who live in California and Florida and trying to figure out WHY we live HERE where everything freezes!!! Supposed to be -10 by the end of the week. Come on Spring!

Oh my goodness, Julie. I am so scared of electric fencing. I bet that was a total shock! (pun intended!) And you were in mud? How long did it take you to get out of it?
I have electric fence out back for the goats and I have to go every few weeks and check it. I have found it sometimes on the ground. So have to go make sure it's turned off and go fix it. Last week me and Kansas had gone out there for a walk and I noticed one of the strand out of the little slot. So I grabbed a stick and tried to push it back down and got a shock. The stick was wet! So there's another note to self. Never touch electric fence with a wet stick!
Yes, I am not likin' being so darn cold. You shouls see my goats. They are so fluffy. We will be the same here, too. I just got my propane tank half full and it's been on full blast ever since. I haven't had a warm house since this crazy cold weather hit us last week. I have to wear extra clothes.

I'm definitely using the cell phone in the breast pocket note...I had mine in my snow pants...when it rang I had a load of hay over my shoulder trying to balance and ever so gracefully throw it to my cows, I hit the phone on the rail and didn't realize my dh had called! LOL all he could hear was me chatting away to the cows in the barn! What a hoot!

Thanks, ladies for all these "notes"! I laughed so hard tears were running down my face! I've already learned some of them, but I'm going to try to remember not to do the rest in the future, LOL!
Here's one I just learned. If you outline your little garden plot with cement pavers, remember where they are Before jamming the metal shovel straight down thru the snow to bury compost! It was like being hit with a tazer, I thought my teeth would shatter! Lesson learned ;)

Melissa, I bet your hubby got a kick out of that. As long as you didn't say some things you wish you hadn't! Sometimes I say someting really loud and have to look around to make sure no one was near to hear it. I really should watch what I say.

Check fences at least once a week. Cows are smarter than ya think. And when a cow wants out, she will make a way out. Tomorrow I will have to get that cow back in without getting knocked down by that cow. Darn cow.
Mazie found a fence she could walk over (again) and went out into the big wide open pasture. At least it wasn't a fence at the fron where she could go on down the road. She's still out there because it was dark when I realized what she had done. I went to get the calf to put her in the stall for the night and she was at the far end of the pasture. She wouldn't come to me and I only saw one pair of eyes in the flashlight. So I went to investigate and saw the fence where she had walked over and out. I hope no coyotes get to her tonight. Darn cow.
So I will be checking fences at least once a week.
