Mixie, a 1 yr old Boer, was having a wonderful "by the book" pregnancy. She started labor, water broke and then everything stopped. I was on and off the phone with the vet and finally got him to agree to see her for a possible c-section. She died in route with my 16 yr old daughter holding her in the back of the van. So sad.
Milo, a 4 yr old Nubian buck, was my best breeder. All the girls wanted to be with him. They would tuck tail for my other breeder but go and rub against Milo.....his stink must have been the "stinkiest".
Milo gets leased out to friends for breeding with their does. He was away from me for the month of Dec. He returned a few days early from my friend because he just didn't seem himself. I thought it was due to being away and traveling or perhaps our uncommon cold weather. We went to the vet, did ultrasounds, etc.... A urine sample showed an infection but no stones were found. So, doses of LA 200 began and 5 days later he was worse. I had to put him down. The vet suspects the infection didn't respond (duh).
When he got sick I had decided to not lease him out anymore and expose him to other stuff. I really thought he'd pull through and live a happy life with just his harem of girls.
My friend doesn't know what happened. I don't hold her responsible but I know she's gonna feel like it.
I'm sad to lose Mixie and Milo. But, it's also a financial blow. I had Mixie's babies already sold.

I am so sorry to hear about your goats. It seems sometimes we just try so hard to do all the right things, and still it doesn't seem enough. It never gets easy to lose one.
I hope you have better luck with your others.

Catherine, so sorry to hear of your losses. It's so sad when things like this happen. I am always a nervous wreck at kidding time here. I want to be here just in case. Did the vet know what happened to Mixie?

I would've had to pay for a necropsy and I just didn't want to spend the money. But, the vet suspects that when labor stopped a kid must've been stuck and she eventually went into distress.
What makes me mad though, is that I had tried for a couple of hours to see the vet and it wasn't until after hours and calling the emergency number that he'd see me. Perhaps the outcome would've been different if it was sooner. Vets around here just don't do goats. They mainly do horses and cattle. This is a huge farming area, heck, we've got the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo....you'd think there'd be more "country vets"
My own cousin is a vet and he wouldn't help me. He only sees small companion animals at his office. I understand that. But, through the years he has gained confidence in my skills and has let me have meds and such. But I was so hurt when he said he wouldn't even come take a look at her!

I thought Texas was a big Boer goat state. They should have goat vets all over. Just about all vets around here work on goats. There's even a few that specialize in goats.

| oh catherine, i am so sorry for you. one of those- ok somebody just kicked me when i was already down? it must have been so hard for your daughter? do you have other goats? losing an animal we love really hurts. i am thinking of you and tears come. hoping for happy days for you and family sherrye |

Catherine, I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your goats! I would be very upset with the vet for offering no real help before it became a critical situation?! How awful that is! My prayers will be with you and your family! I will also be praying that things will work out financially!

Wow, so sorry. I would be thinking and looking NOW for a good Vet that DOES goats and is highly recommended. Others around there must also breed goats, talk to them.

I sure appreciate all y'alls warm comments.
Yep, Boers are popular around here but no real medical care nearby. Prarie View has a dairy goat research center and they help breeders. They're about 2 hours away from me. Of course, Texas A & M has vet services but again 2 hours away. The biggest goat center is in San Angelo and that's a good 6 hours.
There are tons of people out here that have goats for show, meat, dairy or pets. Everyone just kinda does their own vet work on their animals. I do belong to a Houston Area Goat Association and all us members just rely on each other. We all research and share information and help each other out. We pay to bring in goat farmers/ranchers from other areas to give us workshops, speeches, etc... We've all been pretty fortunate to not have big emergencies. Most of our problems have been runny noses, coughs, bloat, hoof rot, abscesses, broken legs, parasites, etc... No one in our group has had a goat have problems birthing. I've bred goats for 6 years and haven't ever had one have a high level of difficulty, either.
I have many other does that will all be kidding soon like dominos.....I'm so looking forward to those new babies.

My heart breaks for you - I know what that is like and there just is never the right words to help you thru this. Just know there are many here who have been in your shoes and we feel your loss.
I get so mad at Vet's never returning calls or not wishing to be bothered with sheep, goats and llamas. My oldest son and I had to do a C section while reading a book because the Vet was no where to be found luckly - he showed as we where closing and he finished but the lamb was already dead and stuck so we had not other choice. The vet said she would never have babies again - well we proved him wrong 8 years of health twins after the C section. I tell folks learn all you can because a Vet is never when or where you need them.
Again, please be kind to yourselves and your friend - these things will happen and we just have to get thru them - with loads of tears, kleenex and farmgals who know your pain.

I am so sorry Catherine!! Now I am very worried about my goat who is due in Febuary. It's her first time and I'm new at this. oh boy!! I'm just worried because she should nevery have gotten pregnant and she's very young. She will be in the lords hands!

Don't worry! I'm sure she'll be fine. Really, goats don't frequently have problems with kidding. Post pics when they're born!

| I am so so Sorry. It really really hurts when you lose your animals. I have lost a set of triplets and set of twin. Almost lost the momma of the twins but luckily she pulled through. My heart sobs for you. Hope things go better with the rest of your goats. |

Sorry to hear of your loss, funny how we get attached to our "non-pet" farm animals. The closet vet, that sees goats, to me is in Navasota, I have only had my does there for annual testing, CAE and John's disease. last spring one of my does deliverd a still born kid about 8-10 hours after the twin bucks, she kept pushing, but did not seem to in distress, and since it was our "first time" I thougt she was trying to pass the afterbirth. My other doe delivered her kid, during the night, and it was dead when I checked the barn in the morning. You did all you could and be comforted in that.

Maybe you should try and organize some of the goat people so they help each other out in these kind of things. I have a few friends that when I call if I am having trouble come on over. they have had goats longer than I have. At least maybe one of them have had similiar things happen and could help you out on the phone if nothing else? Just a thought. I just love my goatees and I feel for you since you lost them. I would feel bad too...one big goat rub coming your way....
