Has anyone heard of the name 'Ruby' on old sewing machines? I bought one last week. It's in an oak cabinet with drawers on both sides and still has the little porcelain pulls on all the drawers. It's a treadle machine. Was 'Ruby' a company? Or a model name? Who made this machine and how old is it? I can't post a pic b/c I'm at home and my internet access is so shaky, I'm surprised if this gets posted. I won't be back at work until Jan. 4th. Thanks for any info anybody has.

I've tried searching online, Sheila. I just can't find anything at all. I found a Craig's List posting, but when I clicked on it, it was no longer there. The poster said it dated to the 1800's. I was thinking more like 1918 or so.

Your info is awesome, Carrie! It looks like I can get a copy of an owner's manual. The pic on craigslist is exactly it. And I found another website: http://www.ismacs.net/newhome/the_men_behind_new_home_a_history.html
that has the history of the company(The New Home Sewing Machine Company). This company was formed on my birthday(Jan.25) in 1882 and they began producing the Ruby machine in 1893. I told my dh that I could depend on a farmgirl to get the answer! Thanks is such a small word. But thanks a million times! :)

Janice glad I could help. I did look at that site also but wasn't sure what you were looking for. I love to go hunting for info. Looks like a great treadle. You will have to post a pic when you get work. I hope you get it running.

I sure learned a lot about the history of the sewing machine yesterday, too. I was astounded to read that there were 7 million New Home sewing machines in use by 1937! I wonder how many Singers, etc. there were. And where are they now? It just doesn't seem possible. What happened to all those machines??

| I'm new to this post but had to share with someone, I just bought a treadle today! I am from Canada and it is a Raymond. It runs like a charm, but I can't seem to find a bobbin for it. I think that I am going to have to call old google and ask him for advice. I am so exited and you are the only one my friends that I knew for certain that would be as excited as myself. Wow! That is a nice looking machine! I have been looking on ebay for some vintage machines but the shipping is super high as these are soooo heavy! Enjoy that Ruby!
