We raise and show Jersey Wooly rabbits and my sons show doe Denim had 2 babies yesterday!!! Our brood doe Bubbles also had 3 healthy babies! This is Denim's first litter and she is doing great and even fostering one of Bubbles' babies. We are so excited! Denim won Best of Breed at the Kansas Rabbit Breeders Association Convention a couple months back.

Show rabbits can be pet types, wool types, and meat types. I raise Californian and New Zealands for meat, my kids have raised both meat and pet types ( Rex ) for 4-H and our local fair. When I was a kid, I raised Dutch, both blues and chocolates for 4-H and our local fair.

Our breed The Jersey Woolies are a dwarf wool type breed. They are a cross between a Netherland dwarf and an angora. My son wanted rabbits after seeing some at our county fair and knowing my husband would want to eat them I picked a small breed that we could spin the wool. Of course I haven't learned how to spin the wool yet.

OK, What is the difference in fur and wool?? I thought Rabbits had fur. How do you harvest the wool? I already think I know where and how you get the fur.

Well there are several wool type rabbit breeds such as Angoras, Amercian Fuzzy Lops and Jersey Woolies. Some types have to be plucked, some cut , our breed sheds naturally when I comb them out and I collect it in a ziploc bag. During the summer several of my friends shave their Jerseys and keep that fur/wool for spinning but I haven't done that yet. I have a bit of wool and a tahkli (supported spindle) for spinning but have only made a mess with it as of yet. I am hoping to get a book on spinning soon to read and practice. Hoping to post pics next week when they open their eyes.
