We watched the 6:00 news last night, got "winterized" and went to Target. We were gone about an hour or so, and when we got home, no tv. I guess, given an hour of downtime, the darn ole' thing just decided to stop working for good. Just as I was looking forward to watching the 4th Season of The Soprano's (Jus and I are about 7 years behind everyone else in just about everything!)....
It's nice and quiet, but this a.m, Jus had on some music (Gillian Welch) and now I have the song that was playing as I was leaving in my head. They call these "mindworms" and it will be there all darn day!!!
Looks like we will be looking for an unexpected Christmas gift. I know, I know, tv isn't everything, but with a little one, and very little cash, it's the only "excitement" we get!!! Gah!

Well at least you can try and find one at a thrift store and maybe it wont cost alot and it can be a nice Christmas present even if you wasnt expecting it. Also you might want to check out free cycle you might can get one for free! Blessings, Karen

Yep, that's where we're headed. Craigs list, I guess, too. I'm not that "technically savvy" so all this electronic speak has me a little buffaloed. Oh well, I would like it to simply turn on

| I know what you mean that TV isnt everything but it sure is nice having around. My family will be going without TV when this months service is up. With the times as they are paying that much money a month just to watch Disney, Discovery, HGTV etc. (lol, we dont watch local tv much) just seems like we can do without. Put that time into learning a new instrament, build a fort and so on. I know this is actually going to be very difficult for ME cause I dvr favs and watch later. I am looking forward to this adventure. |

We just got cable in March, Kayce, because I was going to be home after the birth of our daughter, and I just couldn't bear the thought of "stories" in the afternoons...give me the History Channel, give me the Food network! And, a bunch of extra PBS channels we couldn't get in because of our crappy location. So, that was a nice incentive, and I really do enjoy the variety of things on. We're not glued to it, but we do have favorites. It will be interesting these next weeks while we look for either a gently used or new tv.
Last night, I had no choice but to start decorating for Christmas!!! DH worked the NYT crossword from Sunday, and I got up some stockings, candles in the windows and some other things. Will do more tonight!
You should do an "experiment" and see how much you and your family actually accomplish without the "boob-tube", as my great grandmother called it, (though, in truth, she DID have to watch Lawrence Welk!)

He does, Janice, this is true :) It was "Look at Miss Ohio" from Soul Journey. It's such a great song, but all day long? Yep, now it's back, though it never really left. It was sort of pushed to the side, as more background music, but now it's like I'm back at the concert

That's so funny, Alee...I think I could do it, I would certainly get a heck of a lot more done, but honestly, last night it seemed like the end of the world. I actually thought to myself, "oh my gosh, what are we going to talk about for hours on end????" How crazy is that!?

Ooh! If I could only send you MY tv. Of course, I think I would find myself in divorce court the very next day. And I do like to watch a little of it, but I think, after the first of the year, I'm going to challenge dh to one week of absolutely no tv. Maybe that way I can actually get him to discuss the farm plans and finances for the coming spring and summer season!!!! Cross your fingers for me!

| Good Luck on your challenge Julie! I would love to give ours away too, but might find myself in a wee bit of trouble! We don't have cable or an antenna so we are stuck watching only movies. My dh is a BIG movie fan! (I get a sick feeling in my stomach when I think how much he spent on that darn thing!) I like TV just fine, but I would love to watch the local news and the weather. I have to do my own weather forecasting the old fashioned way by just stepping outside or calling my Mom! |

If you've got cable, Jonni, there's nothing to worry about. I had to get a digital box last February when they stopped analog broadcasting, and the reception is terrible. Plus it killed our dvd player.
It's funny, I didn't watch tv at all during 4 years of college. But now I would miss it so much that I'm willing to fight my husband for keeping it (he's always threatening to put the idiot box out on the curb - although I notice he's right there watching it with me most evenings). |

I'm with Alee on this one, I could go without the tv, i usually only have it on to listen to the music channels, the BF would die without his SPEED channel. When he watches that i migrate to my craft room. Needless to say i'm not a fan

I love history, a&e and BBC america, as well as pbs. I have considered not having cable, but I just really LOVE LOVE LOVE BBC. :)

I have been without tv since it became digital. You can watch a lot of old shows online and many of the current ones. The weather channel has www.weatherchannel.com Somehow I could wire my computer to show on tv and watch it through there.
I have not had cabel since moving to the country. At first it was not available here and we all worked like new farmers with a passion then cable came to the area. My brother and I both live on this land- he and his family are down the hill from me. They got cable and there went all the work. You go in there and they are watching old, old, old shows or hours on end of the weather channel, or the cooking shows. Hours of watching cooking shows and never any of the cooking. You farmgirls all inspire me to cook things I would not have. Like the apple butter. This weekend I am goint to try my hand at bread. Anyway,their house is not my house and they enjoy it. I just feel that we are born with only so many days on this earth and we should not squander any time. Do not get me wrong, I love CSI, and other shows but I just watch them online as I want to. The digital thing was just the way to step out of it.
Maybe someday I will change my mind. The TV I can give up but not the computer and the internet. And I do not have a husband or kids so it is just me that I have to listen to complain about missing whatever I am missing. But I am finding alot more too.
But all of that is just my two cents worth

I am actually looking forward to not having anymore TV. My teenage daughter (who doesnt watch much anyway) is kinda getting wigged out about what the kids are going to say at school. "OMGOSH, you are so deprived! " Its not like they dont have plenty of other technology to keep them busy. Playing and composing music, building and tinkering. I do find that I get stuck in the rut of watching all those HGTV shows and not doing the ideas I get.
You are right. Shows can be watched on the internet and there is a cable ($20?) u can get to attach the computer to the tv.
Though I have a fiance and kids I enjoy my alone time, lol and I find that I talk to myself a lot. Scary, cause I do answer back. I am sure you feel the opposite. Enjoying the time with your brother and family. I have teased my family that it would soot me just fine to live alone in a cabin in the mountains, coming into town when I needed the fill of people then heading back up. LOL, the people and I will probably have similar thoughts. Mine-"those people are crazy". People-"that woman is crazy" Ah the simple life.
Learning to appreciate having a glass..not half full or empty..just thankful for a glass :) |

I haven't had actual tv since June when I moved into my apartment. I couldn't see myself spending $50/month for basic cable when I only want/watch like 5 channels & that's not even every night! I work either 9-5:30 or 9:30-6, so daytime tv is out. I do have a tv & VHS/DVD (mostly ones taped from the tv when I lived w/ my landlady when I was going to college or from before that time - they're getting a little old!), but I don't really watch a whole lot. I get my weather online, or just look out the window at the thermometer (not that it's always accurate, since I'm on the ground level on the north side). But I only miss a few channels. When I go to my cousins', I watch a lot of Food Network & certain shows if they're on. I'm surviving.
