Has anyone ever made it? I found a good recipe for it and had all the ingredients. So it's in the (clean) oven now. It smells wonderfully good. Is sorghum the same thing as molasses? That's what I have. I got it from a Mennonite family in Tenn. that grinds the cane fresh using mules. It's the neatest thing to watch. It's so good.

I can't wait to try it. It'll be ready in about a half hour if anyone wants a piece. Come on over!

Molasses is made from Sugar cane and Sorghum Syrup or Sorghum Molasses is made from the sorghum plant. Sorghum actually has a higher sugar content than sugar! It is made by the same process though. I love sorghum. I think it has a deeper richer flavor. It is so good on fresh homemade yeast rolls still warm from the oven!

I have a chocolate buttermilk pie in the oven right now and it smells divine already!

I learn so much here. Thanks Julie. Your pie sounds good, too. I have a buttermilk pie recipe somewhere. It must be a pie kind of day. It's so cold out.

Sorry Gena, I couldn't wait for ya! I already had a piece. It's good. I'll save ya some, though.

Here's the one I made. I wonder if Channah's is the same.

1 cup flour
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp. butter, crumbled
1 cup light molasses ( I had the real stuff)
3/4 cup boiling water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 egg, beaten
pie shell

Preheat oven to 375. Mix flour, brown sugar and butter. In another bowl, mix molasses, water, baking soda and beaten egg. Add half crumb mixture to liquid mixture, but do not beat. Pour into pie shell and top with remaining crumbs. Bake 10 minutes , then lower temp to 350. Bake 30 more minutes.

It was the easiest pie to make. And very good. Ya'll should try it. Oh, I forgot to add the flies!

I made my crust, too. And it's not pre-baked.

2 cups flour
3/4 tsp. salt
2/3 cup shortening ( I use lard)
4-5 tbsp. cold water or milk

Mix dry til crumbly. Add enuf water to make a good dough. Can be refrigerated but I used it like this. Makes a good flaky crust for an 8" pie pan.

Sherry, I had some pigs butchered not too long ago and I got all the fat to render for lard. That's what I use for biscuits and pie crusts. I hope you get yours so you can make lard, too.

Kris, My mom told me about this pie but she said she hated it it sounds delish to me Im going to try it I think the reason she didnt like it was because she doesnt like molasses, too bad for her. Im going to try and make me the crust too. Thanks for sharing! Blessings,Karen

Wow- just the thought of all that sweet makes my teeth ache a bit. I love sugar but I think that recipe might be a bit too much for me!

I live in PA Dutch country and grew up on shoofly pie. There are 2 kinds. 1 is a wet bottom which has a gooey molasses sryupy type bottom and thick crumb topping. The other kind has the molasses and crumb part mixed together. Both are super sweet. I don't make them anymore but you can buy them all over.

It is sweet. But one little piece isn't too bad. The crumb topping is a bit floury for me. It needed to be more crumbly. I like it though. I like the texture of it. Kind of melts in the mouth. It would be nice after a very savory dinner with a nice cup of coffee.

I love shoofly pie - wet bottom is my favorite. My dad is from Quakertown, PA and his mom had a restaurant for years there. She was always experimenting with different shoofly recipes and looking for the "perfect" shoofly pie. Don't know if she ever found it. Her handwriting is hard to read, so if she did find it, I don't know that I could read it. Now I need to go make one!
