I have a couple of Towels that are getting very tattered on the edges. They are not thread bare though. So I have been brainstorming all morning about what I could do with them.
1. Cut them up for Shop Rags
2. Cut them up for Cleaning Rags
3. An apron that I can use to wipe my wet hands on by adding ties and facing the edges. (I could probably get 4 of these out of the towels.)
4. "Batting" for placemats
5. Stitch them together and make a bath mat.
6. Stitch them together and make a dog rug.
7. Those clever Kitchen towels that hang on the stove or fridge handle.

any other ideas out there?

These are great ideas Kate. Pot holders, (the stuffing part) or some sort of casserole cozy maybe? I have some that just dont look very nice anymore, perfectly serviceable though. YOuve inspired me to do something with them. :)

Kate, you pretty much covered anything I could and have thought about, plus more.

I donate mine to our local animal shelter, they are always glad to get them, Carol

Bathing Suit cover ups or Simple Bath Robes is my idea, if they are not to worn. Here are a couple sites for those instructions:

The backing for a hot pad...fabric layer, then batting (correct name & spelling??)layer, then terry cloth.

I think you have it covered. alot of great ideas here. I use my old towels in the dog kennel, or for clean up projects around the house. They are easy to wash and dry then I don't have to use paper towels.

Welcome the dawn of everyday with a smile & open heart

Here is something that I ran across today...inflatable pillow case covers!

This one I just added, it is a little weird to me, but if you love cats or know someone who would love it, it is a cute idea!

I found another one for you, if you like that pillow one! I am on a roll...hehe! I am acutally going to do this one from old towels my mom gave me, my step-dad has to use a bolster pillow in his chair for his back, so this way he can stop useing a roll of paper towels.

You got many great ideas, but one I didn't see is what my MIL used for years...she had a relative sew up big shoe covers for her guests who didn't want to remove their shoes. (Pretty much just a big old oval with a casing sewn around the edge and 1/4" elastic inserted.) They were quite weird looking and made your feet rather hot but kept her dove-gray carpet pretty for years by saving street messes from coming in the front door. She used to keep a basket of them next to the front door.

Do you have a serger? If you do you can chop off the frayed edges and serge around them with a blendable color or thread and they are good as new....if you don't have a serger you can do the same thing with a wide zigzag stitch on a regular sewing machine...I did this not too long ago to some towels and washrags and they came out fabulous. Watch the tension on the machine but it's very very easy to do...... hope this helps!

Yep. I do have a serger. That is a good excuse to get it out! Thanks!
Here is a link that I found for Crochet Towel Toppers. I especially like the one where you just thread a towel through an opening (basic towel ring)....great stuff! I could use the hand towels with this or could down-size my large tattered towels.

If they have parts that are still in good shape you can recondition them into one of those smaller towels to wrap around your wet hair when you get out of the shower.

I have taken towels, sewn the sides and stuffed with old pillows (when I buy new pillos for the house) creating huge throw pillows for the kids to sit on in the living room when they watch movies. They are excellent! My daughter even keeps one on her bed for when she reads in bed.

It's all good :)
