What do you use on your dogs for fleas?
I'm looking for something effective but not toxic to my dogs or the people around them!

| good idea alee, my sister lived on the oregon coast where we were born. they used diametacioous earth. use it like borax. when she had it done. a pro came in and cleaned the carpets first. then when dry they put the powder on and broomed it in. the powder is the skeleton of a crustacian. no enviement was hurt to get it. you can also brush it on the dogs coat. the little things are sharp and cut the flea and the eggs. for her it was night and day. first thousands of fleas then none. worked like a charm and very nontoxic. i use it in the garden on plants to get rid of worms etc. hope this helps sherryeyou usually can get it at farm and garden places or on line at peaceful valley farm |

Brewers yeast tablets, most dogs and cats will eat them right up, non-toxic and completly safe for all.

Here's what we did...Borax on the carpet. Leave for 30 minutes, then vacuum. Bathe the dog with a mild soap (we use castile) then rinse with apple cider vinegar. Put a bandana around the dogs neck with a couple drops of each; geranium oil, tea tree oil and lavender oil. Add brewer's yeast to the dogfood...lots of steps, but we are officially flea-free! It took about 3 weeks, so it's not instant, but it does work!

Whatever you do stay far away from the store bought flea medicines. They have been reported to cause nerve damage in dog and cats (I worry what it does to the humans that pet the animals!) And have caused death as well. Once a long time ago I used that stuff on my dog before going to the vet and my vet was frantically worried about my dog because I used that stuff. I got read the riot act for that one! I know that HART brand got sued a couple years ago because of pet death related to the flea medicine.

Alee, even the prescibed flea meds that Vets recommend are dangerous, (especially to white dogs), they can cause from mild, to severe, nerological(sp?) problems, seizures and death. What you are doing is poisening your pet in low doses to kill the fleas, and some dogs and cats systems react violently.

I only use apple cider vinegar. Although I have to admit this year fleas were very bad and have had to apply ASV several times. I do not bath my dogs, they are outside all the time and they need their natural coat, so I use a spray bottle and spray their bed and them and rub it into their hair. They smell like a salad for about 10 mins but it works and also makes their coat shiner.

A very caring Farmgirl recently told me about something called " Cedarcide" from cedar tress that she totally swears by, and comes in forms for many uses- dogs, horses ( flies), household, etc. I have not checked it out yet but thought it was well worth mentioning based on her report.

I have tried EVERYTHING mentioned here, including the bad poisons. I cant get rid of them. :( My dogs are also on garlic which is supposed to discourage them.

Sarah, I have a friend who lives in Brownsville Texas, the ONLY thing that works for her flea problem is "orange oil", she gets it at organic vitamin stores. GooD luck
