Hi girls,
I am cooking a pot roast in my brand new, and most beautiful 8qt cast iron dutch oven IN the fireplace! This thing is heavy! I don't know if I will be able to even lift it after it's done cooking, lol . It smells SO good! I'm even watching Little House on the Prairie right now too! Loving it all I added fresh herbs from the garden too. Near the end of cooking, I added some fresh string beans and mushrooms, which are not in the pic...yummy! I also made mashed potatoes. I LOVE mashed potatoes.
I am very excited. I always liked the idea of doing things the old fashioned way, can't help it. I'm wearing one of Grace's aprons too, the one with the carrots. Speaking of carrots- There's nothing like fresh carrots right out of the garden. The freshness, the aroma, the flavor. I've never had a store carrot that came close to the flavor. The other thing prompting me to cook in the fireplace is that everything in this house is electric. I would hate to run the stove for 3 or 4 hours. Bad enough I did it yesterday when I made corned beef and cabbage. The dutch oven didn't get delivered until yesterday afternoon, too late to use it yesterday.
I hope I inspire you to get back to basics with some good old fashioned cooking.

....should I make a bonnet? (get that house 'Little house on the prairie' experience) LOL

Woo-Hoo Connie looks wonderful. I love cooking on my woodstove. I do it all the time, we had pot roast last week ourselves. Even makes the house smell good. I also have all electric so it does feel good to use the free wood heat :) I think I need a snack, you made me hungry.
Warm Wishes Jennifer

Looks yummy and cozy. Does your lid for the the cast iron dutch oven have a rim around it to hold coals in place?

Looks delicious. We used to cook a bit in the fireplace when we first moved in. These days when you most want a fire its a no burn day. Do any of your gals cities do this? We get told when we can and when we cant have a fire. Unless its your primary source of heat, no burn means no fire. Gas logs dont count, just wood burning. |

We have one like that too, Connie. I am anxious to try bisquits on or in it. I am happy you like my screen name. I wouldn't have thought of it if black eyed peas hadn't been on my mind at the time. I hope to make a cobbler in my cast iron soon. It's not quite hot enough here most of the time for a fire yet.

Robin, In the bigger town next to ours they tried to pass that law but, it failed. They do have advisory "don't light tonight" nights when they wish you wouldn't build fires. Our town hasn't tried it yet but, with being smaller and more rural there are too many of us that wood heat is our only heat. I personally love driving into town smelling the wood stoves, kinda feels homey.
Warm Wishes Jennifer
