Ok ladies I would love to hear stories of how you learned to crochet and any tips on where to start...easy patterns etc
After my dad died this past spring I insisted my mom teach me her favorite pasttime...we are enjoying the hours of therapy and companionship it gives us. But being self taught she doesn't have much confidence in teaching me!!!

My great grandmother taught me. I used to make sweaters for the cats (they generally resisted the fitting and wearing process, as well as being driven around the yard in my doll stroller)when I was a little girl.
Being sort of self taught I find patterns sort of difficult to read. I hope there is someone here to help you more than I, but I wanted to chime in my support!

My Mom's mom taught me to crochet when I was around 8 or so.
she taught me many things
Mom helped me too.
I crochet and knit and love both.
One of the easy things to make are Grannie squares and dishcloths.

I am new to crochet as well, I got a pattern book off Ebay called Dishcloths In The Round and I've made several of them. They are all pretty easy for us newbies.

I was taught the basics in school and learned the rest myself. Mom could knit like a pro but she couldn't crochet a chain, lol

my mom and my babysitter taught me when i was six years old. The babysitter was an older lady and she was trying to keep me still for awhile. I could always read the directions for my mom later on but had a lot of problems finishing items. Since joining MaryJane , its been easier to finish smaller items ...hope to eventually apply for the intermediate level of crochet merit badge...right now, still cannot keep focused that long. Just keep practing...it gets easier.

What a wonderful thing to be doing with your Mom! :D
My grandmother taught my sister and I when we were really young (7&9). She taught us the single crochet and we did that for years and years making scarves and anything that could be done into a square.:) Later, she came to visit and taught me a little more.
After I got alot older, I want to expand my horizons...hehe and went to my sister who has learned by reading books and doing. I got a book called the Basics of Crochet and my Grandmother had given me one called I Taught Myself to Crochet. By picking a pattern (mostly blankets) and referring to the books and asking sis to show me, I figured those out.
My sister went really far with her crochet and of course, being the older sister, I couldn't be outdone so I started choosing patterns that I knew were beyond me. I would look up online How-Tos and choosing whichever stitch I wanted to know. My most recent being the Front Post Stitch.lol (Still trying to get the hang of that.) So many patterns have a variety of basic stitches mixed in and make beautiful things.
My favorite crochet website is www.crochetpatterncentral.com It has everything from the very basic pattern to the most intricate. :)
