Every year, my family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, we find out who the neediest familys are in our area, then we will pick 2, we then put together 2 complete Thanksgiving meal boxes, included: a turkey, stuffing, yams, greenbeans, gravey recipe with all ingrediants, fresh rolls, fresh pies and anything else that is needed, this is delivered by a sheriffs deputy 2 days before the holiday anonoumsly. Then with Christmas coming, we do a complete fresh ham dinner with all the fixings, along with toys for all the children in the family, plus practical gifts, i.e., jackets, shoes and socks, etc. This again is delivered by a sheriffs deputy anonoumsly.I know this is a late in the date challenge, but if any of you can afford to do this, there are familys out there that would be eternity gratful.

I would also like to encourage all farmgirls to remember that though donations for special meals are wonderful things, if you can donate to your local food bank each month, it helps fight hunger all year long. Especially in this economy--it's something that I try to do each quarter, even with my dh out of a job. There is always someone less fortunate than we are.

The CSA I belong to always asks if we want to fill a box for a family. It is a nice thing to do and I know they are getting healthy food.
Teresa, Good for you for going the extra step.

Teresa, I really like this idea! I used to do this years ago, but dh and I delivered the packages ourselves. I like the idea of the sheriff's deputy doing it anonymously!!!
How do you do this? Do you call the Sheriff's office and ask them, or do they actively look for people to donate things? I have just never heard of this around here, but am definitely interested.
Thanks!

I called the social services office several years ago with this idea, it took some time due to privicy laws, so I then called our local Sheriffs station and asked if they would help by delivering, they said yes, so then social services agreed. Every year a few friends and neighbors would get together with social services, they would have a list of families, and ages & sexes of the kids, sizes and anyother info we would need, without names, or any personal info, they would give a number for each family. We would start at the beginning of November, getting all of our ducks in a row for our families. We agreed that the deputys would deliver in lou of Santa and The Great Turkey in the Sky, and thats what the deputys would tell the families. I never met any of the families, but the deputys would explain their faces and reactions, and tell us all what was said, which of course would put me and the others in tears, but it is soooooo worth knowing that they were happy, and for many, this is all they got. You all don't need to spend alot, just put your heart and soul into it.

Jonni, My family and I donate all year long fresh and canned veggys and fruit, plus milk, eggs and meat to our local foodbank, including hams and turkeys that are cooked up and served to the homeless for the holidays.
