I just love "hen" talk!! My chicks are on strike right now...no eggs for a few days but the weather is turning colder here! My new ones (I'm told) should start laying in December. I've got most of my girls in a truck camper (painted and wallpapered just for them!) I leave the windows cracked in the winter and the door open so they can go out if they want but their yard is fenced in - I think its pretty toasty warm in there on a cold winters day!!

My other hen I raised last winter as a chick in the basement (because her mom was taken by the same alien that must have been at your house Kris!) anyhoo...she's running free and I picked out my sweetest roo to take care of her! They are a lovely family of 5 now and strangely enough he is such a good dad - he takes care of his chicks more than she does - is that normal??

I'm having the best luck with the darn ducks! Just when I thought they'd have to leave, they started laying the best eggs! It's like an Easter egg hunt out there every morning:) what do they do just waddle and plop out eggs whenever and where ever? I find them in the weirdest places!

we have roosters to have fertile eggs. i am going to try my hand at incubating eggs in spring. also some folks prefer fertile eggs. if you have a good rooster he will help keep chickens calmer. they are not important to the laying of eggs.if they get out of hand here they are gone.there is always a rooster in the mix somewhere or on craigslist.lol i saw a ad where they would pay your gas and give 5 dollars to come get their rooster.sherrye
