So my roomie and I want to go fishing. All I know about fishing is when I went with my dad when I was a little girl. And well...I would sometimes put the worm on the hook and put it in the water and wait. My dad was the one who took the fish off the hook, gutted the fish and everything else that needs to be done. So I decieded to day that I would go and buy what I think are basic items for a tackle box. Besides the fishing pole that I got from my dad I have hooks. Each pay check I will buy one item to help with my tackle box. I don't know when I plan on actually going fishing, but roomie and I plan on going for a day. I found out that fishing license are only $14 for one day. Not bad.
So here is my question, do any of you farm girls have any fishing advice for this farm girl. I'm going to start looking for a beginner book, I know it sounds crazy, but I sat in the fishing isle and didn't know where to start!

There are outdoor satelite channels that have fishing shows, go to the library and check out books on fishing, is there any family close that could teach you. Ask co-workers if any fish, and if so , would they teach you? Go to Castaic dam, or Lake Piru and ask any fisherman there if you could watch and learn. The Big 5 store also would have books and maybe dvd's on fishing.

I LOVE fishing. What a smart way to build up your tackle box. I sure missed fishing at the end of summer...usually the time of year when the kids and I go out nearly each day. My knee surgery made that not happen this year. It means I will start early next year though! We go close by to either the most local reservior..about 5 miles south, or out the canyon to the little lake there. Sometimes we go out to the lake about 7 miles south..to a camping area for the day. I keep my tackle box in the van and in summer we are ready to go most days. I would start with 4 lb. test line, leaders with small single hooks, small bobbers and the squeezy sort of weights and worms. I usually keep some power bait on hand (or the fake salmon eggs) if the fish arn't biting on worms that usually works. I sure wish I could go out with you. I would sure take Teresa's advice and ask around..find someone who likes to fish and ask to go with them..maybe offer to bring lunch! Fishing is something I would hate to live without...such a perfect fun easy and inexpensive hobby!! have fun!

It really depends on what kind of fish you want to catch! Visit your local sportshop, there are always people hanging out giving fishing reports and advice!
Other than Ice fishing the Salmon runs here in Michigan are the next big season here.
