Or at least until I showed up! LOL

I was driving with Nora to go see our horse, when I happened to glance over at an intersection and see a smallish pony outside of a fence. At first I thought it was an irresponsible owner who had tethered it out to graze on the last remnants of green grass. But I quickly saw it was loose and running up and down the fence line to try and get in with some draft horses in a big field.

So I went and talked to the owner of the draft horses but she had never seen the pony either. I tried to get close to it but it would wheel and dash away. Some other neighbors came out and were trying to help me as well.

We got the pony into the draft horse owner's yard but we couldn't get it to go into a corral that was open. So finally I left and drove to my barn and got a bucket of grain and my lead rope plus apple treats. The pony knew what grain was and readily came to the grain bucket so I slowly led him with the grain bucket to the open gate of the corral. Then he balked. He wasn't sure about this. So I set the grain bucket on the ground, hoping to at least get the lead rope around his neck and maybe the halter onto his neck as well. Well the second he felt the rope he bolted. Luckily he bolted forward and into the corral. He is safe and secure now and the sheriff had be notified. He has good weight on him, but is in dire need of a good farrier. It is obvious that he has foundered and frequently. I hope he finds a good new home that can manage his weight and hoof issues.

Obvious, frequent foundering, is horrible. With out a corrective farrier, a good Vet and alot of luck, that poor pony will be crippled and in alot of pain. I hope and pray the coffin bone has not rotated and punched down, if it has, its a death sentence. I hope the owner/owners are found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and I do not feel ignorance is an excuse either.

Teresa- I agree with you. It is obvious he hasn't been trimmed in some time as there are breaks, chips, horrible angles- pretty much everything you cringe to hear about with horses. Not to mention there are horizontal ribs running down his hooves. I would say just on one hoof alone there were 10 or more of those ribs/ridges. Then on one of his front feet it looked like his heel had completely fallen off and you could see his frog just dangling. It was so sad.

Most likely then the coffin bone has punched thru, makes me want to find the owner and hammer nails thru their feet.

How good of you to take the time and figure out how to get this poor creature to a safe spot. it is heartbreaking to hear that people are so callous about the care of their animals. Hope he gets what he needs and a good home...

Alee, you're a number one farm girl for caring about that horse. I hope the horse will be okay.

I am going to check on him/the situation tomorrow when I pick up my grain bucket. The lady who owns the corral that we caught him in owns other horses and was going to make sure he had food and water. We had some awesome strangers all working together for a common cause. Hurray for human decency! :D

Oh Sorry ladies! I went by the house that helped me catch him yesterday and no one was home. The guys across the road said the sheriff did come so I am in the process of trying to get info from the Sheriff's office.

Well I called and the officer left the care up to the discretion of the lady who volunteered her pasture. She was going to try to locate the owner. I will drop by again tomorrow and see if I can follow up with her.
