Hello Everyone
I am Valerie and i am so glad i found a place the has like minded people. I live in alaska and my dream is to own enough land to have a mini farm. Right now i am making do with my 2 dogs, one cat and four fish but i grew up riding horses and hang up around my aunts barn. She had horses, chickens, a pig, sheep and rabbits. I was in heaven. Unfortunately where i live in alaska property is very expensive to the whole lots of property thing is out. My dear partner grew up in ranch country. My dear partner is a male (just want to get that out there) he and i have been together 4 1/2 years so i feel he is more than my boyfriend. We have our own log house that we build but it is on my dad's land. So that is about it for me. I am so happy to be in a place with so many minds putting ideas out there. Thanks for the welcome

Welcome Valerie!! Wow...Alaska..that is someplace i want to visit someday! How fun to get to live in a log home you guys built yourselves! that is quite an accomplishment!! It will be fun to get to know you!! Jump right into the conversations!!

Hi Valerie! First of all Welcome!! and second i love Alaska and im so jealous that you live there...however i have never been there!! AHH!! Im just crazy obsessed with that place! Ive always wanted to live there... What part are you from? So glad to see you here. Enjoy!

Welcome Valerie! Where in AK do you live. We loved in TOk for a year and a half. Our youngest was born in Fairbanks. WE found that we would neve make sourdoughs, so we came back to the lower 48s. good memories though. Saw some great Auroa Borialis when there. I look forward to learning more about you. Julia V.

WOW you guys are fast, i live in south central alaska in Homer. But Dp and i are thinking of moving farther north to the Matanuska Susitna valley, where there is cheaper land. that is where mst of the farming in alaska happens. I want to move to a town called Talkeetna. It is very nice.

| Hi Valerie! I am new here to. My husband commercial fishes in Alaska during the summers. Where in Alaska do you live? My husband wants to take me there this summer, I have always wanted to go and since he works up there I might get to! My name is Shellie I live on Oregon coast. I am 26 have 3 kids ages 4, 2, and 5 months. I live on 17 acres with cows, horses, pigs, chickens, a dog and a herd of elk. I love flowers and anything gardening, cooking, sewing , knitting, you name it! What are your hobbies/interests? Nice to meet you! Shellie |

Hello Shellie, i live in homer. i love Cooking, knitting, quilting, reading, horse back riding and camping. my very weak point is cleaning. id i could afford it i would really pay someone else to do it. (blushing)

Ive been to Homer and Talkeetna, interesting little towns, but all of Alaska I think is interesting.
I used to go to Thorne Bay every year for Cedar basket and pine needle basket classes. I know that the REAL Alaskans dont consider that area of Alaska to really be Alaska, HEHE but it was fun access only by boat or plane.
Dont they grow alot of Cabbage , like reallly big ones
hope you have fun growing different things

I'm with the other gals....would love to see Alaska. It's such a beautiful piece of nature.
Tomatoes! Tomatoes! Oh, I hope your tomatoes do well. Each year I plant more and more varietites and still want more.....so yummy and versatile. How long is your growing season there? I don't know if any of my varieties would grow there, but I'd be glad to look into it and then send you some seeds.

Thank you for the welcome everyone. shirley i work for the ferry service so i have to consider southeast "really" alaska but must people i know call it "way north washington" Cajungal We have a short growing season i can't plant anything in the ground outside till the about the last week in may or the first week in june. I have never grown tomatoes before so it will be a learning experince for me. Dp is going to build me a green house for the tomatoes. He is the tomatoe eater in my family. A friend gave me a brandy wine tomatoe last year to take him and he about went through the roof. He almost begged me to grow them. so i will be trying those and a few others. i need ones with a short growing season through.

Hi Valerie, welcome to the farm! How close are you to the Canadian border? I live in Lethbridge, Alberta and my next big trip is to drive up north thru Alberta, thru the Yukon, into Alaska. Good luck with your gardening plans. I too share in your cold weather gardening challenges.

i live about 770 mile from the border, but i and farther south than the border, you come throught the boder and it is like a straight shot to Anchorage then straight down the kenai penninsula to Homer. Maybe you and i should share gardening tips. my only tip has been to grow things in old tires because they heat up faster.
