So, the holidays are coming and you want to use Grama's silver. It is all tarnished and needs to be polished. What do you do?
Get an aluminum cookie sheet. Lay silver single file on the sheet. Sprinkle with baking soda. Pour boiling water over the top. Whoo-Hoo for chemical reactions. The soda and aluminum react, causing the soda to bubble. Voile', you have shiny silver. Bigger things like vases, serving trays, even a tea service can be done the same way , you just may need to use a bigger aluminum container.
Just had a thought, if no aluminum container is to be had, could one line something with aluminum foil and achieve the same affect? Hmmm. Sounds like a homeschool project to me!

I second Alee's yes! Isn't this the best! I actually bought one of those trays they sold on TV until I realized I didn't need to drag that out, just put some alum. foil in the bottom of the sink. Woo Hoo, that's the kind of cleaning I like!

Ok, I'm not sure if this belongs here or not, but I'm going to try it. I have these old salt & pepper shakers from my Grandma's (I think), and the lid to one of them is crusted on & I can't get it off, no matter what I use. I think they are silver, just from the tarnish-y look to them. If I put the baking soda in water on top of aluminum foil, would that make the top "unstuck"?? I'm at a loss as to what to do with them, since I want to clean them, but I also want the lid off of it!

What perfect timing. My husband and I just returned from a trip to my parents. It was bittersweet when my mom and dad presented me with my grandmother's silver. The sweet is their precious thought for me, along with being able to remember every delicious meal prepared by my Grandma or my Mom, and enjoyed by our family. The bitter is the awareness that dementia is robbing my sweet mother of her talent and ability to entertain.
I very much appreciate the tip to help me clean the silver for the holidays.
If I may, I also covet your prayers. It is so difficult to know that my mother is going through this, and even more, that she is painfully aware of her own decline. I love her so. It hurts.

| Just cleaned a piece of silver jewelry with worchestire sauce. Worked. Go figure. And I've used toothpaste too. You need to use the "old" fashioned cream kind though...not the gel. |
