My husband had five pair of jeans with the knees out. He uses them on the farm and when he bends down they get caught on his knees. These are large rips mind you.
If he was two I could put a truck patch over them. That won't fly with my husband. I have never done anything like this before. Do you think I could sacrifice a pair and just cut big patches? What do I put on the inside back?
I remember my mom used little iron on patches that seemed to gather up all the torn fabric on the patch. I have never seen a group up patch though.

I've done jean patches...I start by trimming off all the ragged edges of the jeans, I don't cut too much, just any loose threads that might bind up the sewing machine. Then I take the piece of denim I'm using to patch, to the inside and secure it...hand-tack it in a couple of spots or pin it in place. I try to make sure the patch is 5/8ths inch of fabric overlap to the inside.
Run a zig-zag stitch on the outside of the jeans, around the opening, catching the edge of the jeans and securing it to the piece inside. I run the stitch, pretty wide zig-zag the first run, then turn the leg inside out and check to make sure the patch is smooth and is in place the way you want it, no wrinkles or bunching, which hurts to lean a knee on...make any corrections @ this time, then you can run the zig-zag in a bit tighter stitch. Then, I'll run another zig-zag on the outside of the jeans, next to the first, staying within the 5/8ths of fabric I know I have inside.

Thanks Chandra. I can do that. In fact I will be doing that probably tomorrow afternoon. I need it to keep the rain out too!
Alee I will check just to see if they have something that big. At the very least I should get some easy patches for fixing rips before they get so out of control. My kids have so many pants that they inherited that I tend to toss them in my scrap pile rather than patch. :)

| My husband uses a combo of iron on patches and sewing. Yes, he sews. He is way batter at it than I am. He has used an old pair of pants that he saves for patches, but the iron ons are easier. He rips the heck out of his pants, or rather the machine he works in does. |

I have patched by taking out the seams next to the knee and putting a patch that goes all the way across and is re-sewn into the seams. Then topstitched ono the top and bottom of the patch. It ends up looking similar to Carhart work pants and works well.

Thanks Robin. (We lived in Denver in Highlands off of 38th for a number of years. We redid an old Victorian and loved being so close to LoDo. We left for PHX for family business and so missed Denver. Now we are in the PNW though and this is what has been calling us. I grew up Outside of the North entrance to the AFA. Gosh I love and miss Colorado. Where in Denver are you?) I may end up doing the same Robin with a mix. I haven't actually really sat down and LOOKED at his pants in terms of fixing them.
Angie thanks for the idea. I just wish I could use some really cool fabric to liven up his pants but he is not too interested in that at this time. lol Maybe when he is a little older and wants to make a statement.

Jana, what is PNW? I grew up in Colorado Springs, both my mom and step-dad worked @ the AFA. Miss it, miss the 4 seasons. Anyway, hope the jean patches work out great for you!

I should have said... I use denim from another pair of pants. lol Nothing flashy. My dh wouldn't go for that either!
It blends in better and looks more like it is "supposed" to look like reenforced knees and not a patch job. You could even use the rivets on the corners --- like they do on the work jeans the guys wear around here.

Chandra the Pacific NorthWest is where I live and in particular Oregon. I born in Louisiana though. lol small world. My dad was in the service and I was born at Barksdale AFB in Bossier City (I think I have that right.)
Angie - I would use blue jean material - I just wish I could use something a little more fun to sew with. Having all boys I don't frequently find myself sewing much pink fabric. I am going to cover a pair of my own jeans though with something bright and fun just for the heck of it.

It's wonderful to find similarities among farmgirl sisters.
I was conceived in C. Springs, (my dad was AF, stationed @ Ent AFB which is now the Olympic Training Center), born in TX, then several moves later, parents split. Mom settled in C. Springs where I met my husband, (a Louisiana native). He owned a VW shop & I needed my VW repaired :) ...now I'm in Louisiana.
