Does anybody know how to clean beeswax so you can make candles, etc. with it? My boyfriend is a beekeeper and has lots of wax left after extracting the honey. I would love to do something creative with it, but it needs to be cleaned of all the little bits of leaves, twigs or whatever is in it.

Thanks!
Luanne

Hey Luanne, I've put it in a ziplock baggie in a pan of boiling water to liquefy it and then poured it through paper towel. Does the trick! :)

We clean about 150 lbs a year. We melt it in a huge pot, then pour it through layers of cheesecloth. I have heard that old sweatshirts make a wonderful sieve but haven't tried it. If you are cleaning a smaller amount, I'd use this trick: put the chunks of beeswax in an old pair of hose, and tie shut. Melt it, hose and all, in a pot over low heat. Then pull out the hose. the majority of the impurities stay in the hose. One caveat: beeswax is tough to clean. I find it much easier to have a few pots and spoons dedicated to just beeswax melting and cleaning. go get some at goodwill...you'll be glad you did. :)

Hi Maggie !

We have a lot of beeswax, but I think I'll try a small batch first until I'm sure what I'm doing. We have a Salvation Army near here, and I'll look for some cheap pots.

Thanks!
