Okay, I need some advice when it comes to selling a vehicle. We have a 1997 van for sale. It has a few issues, which we are upfront about and that is why we are just charging $550 for it. Tonight a lady called and is very interested in it, as she seems desperate for a car and can't afford much since her other car just blew. Anyway, she mentioned she can come tomorrow to look at it but asked our bottom price and I said probably $450. She said she doesn't have much cash right now and could front $300 and pay later on the rest. There is my dialimia. I want to help her out, as she sounds like she really needs a vehicle now and doesn't have much to spend at all, but at the same time I don't know if I can trust her to pay the rest. I thought about holding the title until it was paid in full but then wouldn't we be in trouble if she wrecked the van or something and we had the title? I said I was willing to work with her but now I'm not sure what to do. What would you all do/say?

I would do it only if you are willing to write it off as a loss at the $300. And make sure she payes with a money order or cash just incase! If you want you could always have her sign a contract.

Personally Elizabeth, I would tell her the lowest you can go is $450 (and nicely tell her cash only). There are some real scam artists out there and while this lady may very well be one in need, she may not be too. I think Alee said it best...give it to her if you're willing to write off the balance. My guess is you would never see it.

I agree with Diane. Tell her you are sympathetic to her plight but because of the economy and your own challenges that $450.00 is your rock bottom price. BTW, that's SUPER cheap.

I'd have to agree with the girls. Unless you can afford to just write off the other $150 I wouldn't do it. Once she walks away with your title, there is nothing you can really do to make her pay the rest.
AND Linder is totally right too!! $450 is super cheap!!!! ( We pay over $800 for an older vehicle 2 years ago!)
Hope you can come to a happy decision :D

You can always keep the title and have it put in her name with a lein on it in your name. Meaning she is owner but that if she doesn't pay or tries to sell it before she has paid you then she can not sell to get her money. Call your local Dept of Motor Vec. they can tell you the best way to handle.
