I got my first fruit babies in the mail today. I got 50 strawberry plants. Trouble is, they were preemies! (Well, to me anyway.) I thought the seed company sent them specific to your zone. Well, here in NY we got 3 inches of snow recently so it's way too early to plant them. Heck...our land isn't even tilled yet.
Well, I called the company and they said I could put them in containers. She said I didn't have to space them out, just bunch a few in together and throw some soil over them, keep them watered and well drained.
Well I also have all my windows/table space taken up with my veggie seedlings. Some of those are dying off (dampening off?) cuz I can't get them enough sunshine or light.
So I guess my question for the day is do you think my berries have a chance? *sigh*

You bet Rose Marie. I tilled and weeded my strawberry beds a week ago and then emailed the wholesaler to send 'em on over. It snowed the day they arrived, so I now have 300 plants sitting in a box. I made sure they were slightly damp (not wet) and put them into our cold garage. That should keep them dormant until I can get them in. I'm pretty sure if you pot them and put them into a warm room they will burst into new growth.
Just make sure you don't keep them too wet and check often for mold.

Dang. Wish I had a garage lol. How's about in my laundry room? But should they stay in the dark?
Also, when I planted them in the containers I am supposed to cover the bulb part right? Ha! You all didn't think I was THAT green did ya?
The reason I'm asking is because on the slip it said not to cover the center leaf. Now that isn't the same as the bulb right? Hard to tell for me.

When I did my strawberry bed a few years ago....I took them all out, put them groups of about 5-7, placed a rubber band around them and then I set them in a bucket of water. just a inch or so...enough for the roots to get wet. Then they went out on the porch till we were able to get them in the ground. They did just fine....and by the time I planted them...they had perked up real fine from there long trip here. ;o)
