Okay, I have always wanted to sew. It kinda runs in the family I guess. My mom took the sewing machine when she divorced my dad at the beginning of this year. So now I have my own sewing machine.
I am just curious if any of you have any neat ideas on what to sew?? i love aprons so I am looking for patterns. I'd like to sell them eventually at a store in town along with homemade soap.
Let me know if you have any ideas.
Thanks a bunch!!

Melissa, I'm a beginner sewer and I'm learning by making aprons. They're fun to make (and wear)!

Hi Melissa!

I am somewhat of a beginner at sewing, too. One place where I have found several ideas is http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/. Almost everyday they show a new project to make. Each month they have a different "theme" or whatever, so one month they have alot of baby gifts to sew, another month is projects for your home, etc. Their tutorials usually have alot of pictures to go with them which is very helpful for me because I am awful at following patterns. Some easy projects that I have done are crayon rolls, a cover for my toaster, tote bags and PJ pants for my babies. I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them right now.

Look at the left side of the Sew, Mama, Sew page and scroll down to where it says Projects and Tutorials. Hopefully you can find something there that interests you. I know there is a link somewhere in the Sewing and Craft forum here on MJF with a link to lots of apron patterns. Good luck!

Hi Melissa,

I'm kinda new at it myself. I just scour the internet for sites, and have some books. It's fun to experiment making things.

An easy first project might be pillowcases. There are several free patterns/instructions on the internet.
Another first project might be one of the shopping totes. Some of those are pretty easy - straight seams and simple instructions.

Good luck. Once you get hooked sewing, you may not stop.LOL

Aprons and totebags sound like good ideas to me.
And pillowcases too. :)

There are a lot of suggestions right on this forum too.

I'm a beginner too! My mother bought me a White. Its probably from the 1960's, heavy duty and pink!!! It is the cutest machine. Im working on a hand bag first. I just started cutting out the pieces yesterday. I'm kind of wingin it! We will see how it goes. I too am interested in making lots of aprons, bags, skirts, etc... My next project will be an apron probably.

Longing to be on a farm.

Someone suggested pillow cases, which are very easy to sew. They make wonderful gifts too . . . there are so many neat fabrics, so that just the right one can be chosen for the giftee! I've made a lot for my grands. I pick out fabrics that are special to each one, I applique a small stuffed heart on the inside of the hem, and I include a little card that says this is a "Sweet Dreams" pillow case made especially for you . . . I leave a blank to sign it, and a note at the bottom to look for the "heart" inside.

Have fun!!!
