Hi I have a few questions, I live in florida and a lil new to this game... but where do you buy chicks and what time of the year should you buy? I would like to get some going! I had some when I was growing up so I know a lil about.
I have not seen too many on mary janes from the florida area.. it seems as you'all have all the fun in the northern states

I am in TX and get them from: http://www.ideal-poultry.com/contactus.htm
Because the prices are cheaper. If you have a Tractor Supply or any farm type store you can call them and see if they get them locally to save you money. Most buy in the spring, but I buy now so they are ready to start laying come spring. I just keep a light bulb on a timer in their sleeping area at night so they stay warm.

I am in northern Mi, and also buy from Ideal. Or I can get them locally from the Amish community nearby. Up here we prefer to get them in Spring, as Winters can be harsh. I do have some Serama hatching now that will be spending the Winter inside. Didnt really expect them to lay and brood this time of the year, but they did. Maybe will earn a bit of cash for that new sewing machine I've been drooling over. |

check craigslist in your area or your local 4-h clubs might can hook you up with a poultry breeder, also if you have any feed and seed supply stores around there they can let you know of local breeders in the area.. Maybe take a drive towards Ocala way to check around there. There is a large 4-h ag type community in Ocala/maybe check the Ocala area craigslist too. A good time of year to start with the baby chicks in Florida is about Feb./March that's when alot of the feed supply stores get their baby chicks in and if you start then you should wind up with laying hens starting to lay their first eggs by about October.

Hi Sherri, There are a few of us from Florida! I live in Tampa and have a couple of hens in my backyard. Tractor Supply had chicks last spring but I haven't been in that store since to see if they carry them at other times of the year. We go to a local feed store for most of our needs and they seem to have different breeds of chicks year round with a list of the breeds on order. Check the local area for feed stores and give them a call. |

Thanks for all the info. I started trying to get in touch with some feed stores and finding out some are not open any longer.
