Last night I made a Facebook account for our farm, the idea being to separate it from my personal account. After going through the usual prompts for pictures, profile info, etc., the page came up that suggests friends I might be interested in. And guess what...there were several of you gals suggested! I'm sitting here looking at these ladies and wondering why Facebook would suggest all these people I don't know and then suddenly got a "hey, wait a minute...I know her!" revelation!! So my question is, how on earth would Facebook know to suggest the gals on here as "friends"???

It was really weird Amanda, I was really dumbfounded, particularly since I hadn't put anything at all into the profile at that point. Actually, I still can't understand how the association was made!

I had the same experience just this past week signing up for Facebook. It gave me a list of people I have on my Myspace along with several of their relatives! Also, I'm on a yahoo sewing group and some of those people were on the list. Just goes to show ya ... the internet has tentacles all through your harddrive. Scary, huh?

Sometimes, a program will recognize the use of a certain computer. I know Facebook is like that. So, if you have a personal acct with Facebook using the same computer you used to set up your Farm acct, then it recognized that your friends would probably be the same. :) That is why if you use a different computer, even if you have your password saved normally, you have to sign in again.

Sometimes I really think Facebook knows too much already. I would suggest not giving too much info thru it. The first thing they get is your email address and a screen name you use. Possibly our email addresses are recognized, but that means our email address is known and shared all over...yes, it's strange. My suggestion is don't give too much personal info...this is how young kids get into problems.
On another note: Facebook is the way I found my long lost son whom I hadn't heard from in years...so the internet can be a very good tool.

I don't know how but Facebook got into my address book. It started because I do the Alumni Memorial List for my high school and I do the reunions so I have lots of address's from that names just started popping up to add for friends. Now ones from here are coming up so I've asked my computer guy to take a look and tell me how they are doing that.

I think it goes through your email inbox (you have to give an email address to get an account) and suggests anyone whose email address is also linked to a facebook account.
I'm pretty sure it's the account rather than the computer you sign up on, because I created my facebook account at work and it immediately suggested all the friends from my personal email. |

the thing with the email acct, is that there is a page where you have to sign into your email using your email's password to give them express permission to pull friend suggestions from your acct. Of course, knowing how Facebook is, I wouldn't doubt it one bit if that they just don't go ahead and do it anyways. hugs

I agree Sharon, it is scary. You see this is the thing, FaceBook pulled the personal FaceBook accounts from gals here to suggest as friends...Susan D, Jenny, Theresa, Lora, Morgen, just to name a few off the top of my head. And please don't misunderstand, I think it would be fun and GREAT to have everyone of you as friends on my farm FaceBook account (my personal one would bore you to tears!). It just freaked me out when FaceBook made the association between here (a private forum) and itself. Di |

Diane if you are friends with any of the girls from on here on facebook it will look at their friends and see if any match. If they do it will use your friends friends to suggest people to you. It cannot access your email without your permission because you actually have to type in your wmail password in order to do that. If you used the same email to sign up for both facebook accounts it will look at your other facebook to suggest friends.

Yes, you are right Julie and I do understand how the friends of friends thing works. But I don't have anyone at all from here on my personal FaceBook account (it's almost exclusively family) and the email address for the Daisy Farm account is different than my personal one. Di |

Facebook doesn't get into your address book. They just suggest friends based on friends you already have, your listed interests, and pages that you become a fan of. I am totally addicted to Facebook, Farmville, and Island Paradise. I have made so many nice friends and gotten re-acquainted with high school friends.

Take care, Melissa.

I can teach you Farmtown. There is a lot you are just supposed to learn by osmosis unless you have someone nice show you. That is what happened to me.
I know this is a bit off topic but I am just letting some of you know who might be interested. On Farmville you plant your crops and harvest your crops and when asked to do so you rake, or water or weed your neighbors place. You get points for all of that. The difference in the two games is that in farmtown. You can go to the marketplace and wait to be hired to work for other farmers You get paid to harvest so you can have coins to put into your place. And you get experience points which advance you in the levels. If you hire someone to harvest your crops you get paid more for the crop and if you hire someone to plow it cost less than plowing yourself. So you should never harvest your own crops and your should always hire someone to plow. Also on farmtown you talk to your help and those you visit. People all over the world are playing. That makes it kind of cool.
OK, off my farmtown box. LaVonna

Farmtown sounds like fun LaVonna, but I truly do not need another addiction! I'm joining Kay's Farmville 12 step program...LOL. Oh, and I can always use a neighbor or two in Farmville! :) Di |

Face book searches your files on your computer for names. Thus suggesting some new friends :)

When you first join facebook it will prompt you to let it search your email address book. It stores your contact info and then later if someone joins facebook that is in your contact list it will tell you that they have.
If it stored what was in your computer then you would all have been offered to me as potential friends. Because stuff from Mary Janes Farm is in my computer. It just stores what is in your email address book and that is only if you let it do this. You have to type in the address and give it your password. If you do not want to you can skip this step. Then you just let your friends know on your own that you are on facebook.
