This would be my first OFFICIAL post here on the forum

So... I'm Apache and Navajo and Indigenous Day (or Columbus Day) and the University of Idaho homecoming parade are coming up, and I've been dying to make my own pair of moccasins to wear when I participate in the parade with the Native American Student Association, but I'm not exactly sure where to get the leather for them.

I'm trying to make ones that are hard-soled. Is there anybody on here who might be able to help me? I would really appreciate it

It looks like you have a leather shop in your city.

Felicia- Moscow Hide and Fur is an awesome shop. Do you know Moscow very well? Go to Washington ST and head north like you are going out of town towards CDA. Take a right on E st (Just past the new WalGreens). Go up E st until you have just started going up the hill and take a left onto North Polk Extension. Keep going down N. Polk Ext on you right you will see some houses and then some fields and then the PCEI Campus (Did you know MaryJane started PCEI?) and right after PCEI there will be a few more houses and then Moscow Hide and Fur. It's about a mile and some down the road from East E St. They also sell farm fresh eggs there for a good price.

Thank you, Robin and Alee! I didn't know there was a leather store here. That takes away the worry that I was having! lol I was thinking that I would have to buy it online.

Hey, that's a great site you posted, Alee. Felicia, you might want to consider the sneaker-type directions if you don't have enough time to make the real thing before the parade and then work on the real ones as you have time.

Well, actually Mom... it's rather easy to make moccasins. It's the beading that's all the work! Lindsey and I decided that we could make our own pair, and then after the parade, we could start beading them (I got a bunch of "beading with leather and Native American bead designs" books xD) so that we'll be able to wear them to the Tutxinmepu Powwow in the Spring =P I also plan to make other sorts of beaded things, like barrettes for my hair and whatnot. I'm really excited!!!

I wish I knew the name of the book I used when I made mine. It was a little brown paperback circa 1950-60. It had great measuring and fitting instructions as well as many different styles to choose from. Good luck with your project. Let us see what you come up with.

So, my friend and I went to Michael's today to take a look at that kit. I must say that I was extremely disappointed with everything about it. It was foam and cheap leather. This is probably the biggest reason why they weren't so comfortable lol. So... I caved in and hunted down a moccasin pattern from Jo-Ann's. It was only $10, and there are seven different patterns in there! I'm so excited now. Just have to wait for that leather and sinew to come in! And... wait for someone to explain that pattern language to me lol.

What about going to the thrift and see if you can find a jacket or purse that might work.
