Does anyone have any suggestions or favorite project/crafts to do at home with recyclables and things around the house? We are on a tight budget and are trying to live more simply and use things we have around the house to save money and help the environment. We want to do something fun and original like many of the things we see in MJ.

One thing that I do with recycleable jars is use them to store things in. Either foodstuffs or craft items,buttons,trims,etc. I used to put squares of clth over the lids and tied it with a yarn or ribbon.
I remember when we used to use those plastic things that went around the six pack can of soda. We cut them apart and crocheted around them in green then tied a bow on and we had these little wreaths that we used to decorate our Christmas tree or packages with.
Hope you can find some good ideas here. Looking forward to hearing from some more girls on what they do.

Have you read "yo yo ideas" in the stitching forum (just a few steps under your question). Lots of good ideas there if you have bits of fabric and can sew a simple seam. Good Luck, Sharon

You can make your own paper! That is really fun. You can make cards or use molds for making pictures/xmas decorations.
You can use magazines to make beads...then make earrings and necklaces.
You can use juice pouches to make wallets and purses by sewing them together.
You can use plastic containers (the clear kind veggies/fruits come in) to make shrinky dinks in the oven.
You can use eggs to make xmas decorations by covering them with sequins/beads/buttons (after you have blown out the insides for an omelet/cake)
You can compost your kitchen waste in a worm farm under your sink.
You can make bird feeders/food from old pine cones or apples/oranges for winter.

use an old catalogue or magazine to cut out a paper doll and mount her on cardboard from a used box, then use recycled wrapping paper or wall paper samples to make her clothes.

I love paperdolls! My boys would even play with them..especially if the dolls were boys too.
I used regular white computer paper...or any kind of paper. We drew or colored the clothes in. There are also lots of free paperdolls and crafts to print from websites. I found folding cars, etc.

I have purchased some wool sweaters from the Thrift Store and plan on trying to make fingerless gloves and coffee cozies (for travel cups) from them once they are felted. You could maybe even make eyeglass sleeves (to store glasses in when not in use), pillows, handbags (Country Living magazine had instructions for these a few months ago), Tea Cozies and sleeves for Hot Water Bottles :)
