Hello all, I was thinking that it would be so cool if Maryjanes would do a series of things about farmgirls in the 1940s. I have a really cool grandma who will be 90 in March and she is a farmgirl if ever there was one. She is a sharp lady with a lot of interesting friends and it would be neat to think about what a farmgirl would be doing in the 1940'-- making food stretch, ration card art projects, crafts from things around the house, all that cool kitchy 40's material. The kids and I read an American girl cookbook that had neat recipes and projects, and there was another book that was posted somewhere on here about those gals in upper US that ran a radio station teaching about homemaking, canning, etc. There are so many resources to use and right now in this economy, it would be nice to hear about Victory Gardens and that pinching a penny can be patriotic too!
These gals who are in the last years have so much to teach us. It would be so "maryjane" to honor them that way. Anyway just an idea. Love love love the magazine,
Happy Trails!

Rachael: You must readthe book "Little Heathens" It's about growing up on the farm in the 30's and 40's. It is well written and I think every farmgirl should read it.

Mary Jane, How about directions for a well-stocked pantry? In depth. I know there is a book I haven't seen about the pantry, but you would do such a good service for those just getting started.

How to stock a pantry is a great idea! We used to get the Bringham Young channel and they had some great programs on this. The focus was on stocking up on those things you will actually use. To do it in a frugal but also fun way-- that would be a great topic for MJ. What a great idea!

Rachael - I love the idea of focusing on 1940's farmgirls - so timely, as we are on the verge of losing this generation. Both my grandmothers passed away in the last few years, and they lived through times of plenty and times of deprivation, and had a lot of wisdom to pass on regarding both.
Such a good idea!
