Yes, slimy slugs--is it just me or does this seem to be a banner year for them? One night I went outside and there were four BIG slugs on my garage door. This past Saturday, I saw one crawling out the back door of my garage and it must have been close to five inches. i can't remember ever seeing such huge slimy slugs. And their little antennas make them look like something from a Godzilla movie. I know they have their place in nature but slugs are just so creepy looking. Even their name sounds creepy. I hope I don't see any more huge, slimy slugs this year. and no, I don't want to get rid of them, I just want them to be invisible.

| Salt comes to my mind when I seen them back in Maryland..They were huge!! My daughter and her family never seen them that big and called me up and asked me what to kill them with..The slugs were creepy looking and scaring their son..he wanted them GONE!!..told them to sprinkle salt on top on them and watch them withers away....Slugs in my part of Texas are small and my ducks makes a feast out of them..lol |

Nadine--I've read that toads eat slugs and I've been finding toads in my
yard lately. Especially when it rains. Trouble is, the slugs are nearly as big as the toads!

Salt will take care of the slugs. Or, you can put a small can of beer by the garage door and they crawl in and drown.

I had slugs until I got chickens. They ate most of them. I try to let my chickens roam as much as possible, except where I have new plants or tomatoes that they like. Then I just fence them out of that area. I have heard the beer works good though.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

Ducks!! Since we got ducks, I rarely see them and they are plentiful here on the wet coast!

Yuck! Slugs really creep me out. I can't wait until I can have a little flock of chickens!!
Have you ever noticed how chickens can solve so many nuisances around the garden? They eat grasshoppers and other pesky bugs, they eat slugs and I bet snails too. And like peapicker does- If you keep some fencing on hand you can fence them out of certain areas of the garden if need be. I just love that thought after all the bugs I had to deal with this summer with out some feathery friends!

I put a greenhouse up this year to do winter gardening and every slug in the tri-state area seems to have moved in there. I have read they freeze in the winter and thaw in the spring, well in the greenhouse it is eternal spring. I have lost quite a bit to those things and no predators are around to eat them. I can't get the guinea in the greenhouse, they never do what I want them to do. I have tried the beer thing and caught a couple, but mostly I have been hand picking. I hate to add salt or diatomaous earth now because I grow right in the ground and I think that would hurt the plants. If anyone has any other ideas, I would love to hear them.

I didn't have a problem with slugs this year. In fact, I saw very few of them. What I did have an abundance of was snails and at least they are very easy to pick up! UGH, gross. Just put them on something solid and stepped on them.

I hate to admit this, but during the height of the season when I was having some serious slug issues, I went out every night at dusk with my spade and practiced my "slug tossing". I gave them a big toss into the neighboring woods (my gardens were right on the edge so I only had to wing the slugs over a fence). I swear it was therapeutic and I got good enough to make it an Olympic event.

Slug tossing sounds like fun, but did you ever get "slimed"? that's what grosses me out most about slugs.
