I just took a look at the ingredents on my jar of garlic salt and was shocked to see that there are 5 ingredence on there besides garlic and salt. I don't want Hydrogenated oil in anything, let alone a seasoning. Does anyone out there know how to make garlic salt just using those two things?

Here is what I found on the web.

8 - 10 Garlic bulbs
2 - 3 Cups table salt

The garlic should be very firm and not have any green shoots starting.
Break the bulbs into cloves and cut away the bottoms.
Crush cloves slightly and remove the skins.
Finely chop the garlic and mix with the salt.
But reserve half a cup of salt for later.

Use glass pans to spead the salt and garlic onto. (do not grease)
Either a glass baking pan or the glass piece in the bottom of the microwave.
Turn your oven to the lowest setting about 125 - 150 F.
The garlic and salt sit in the oven to dry for up to 6 hours.

Just remember to stir the mixture every 15 - 30 minutes so that it all dries.

After the mixture is completely dry and light tan in colour, let cool.
Put the dry mixture into the food processor for a few minutes to break up the garlic to almost a powder, but not quite. Add another half cup salt.

Store in a tightly sealed container in a cool dark place to maximize flavour over time.

Thanks Anne. I just stumbled upon Susan's post and find the info very useful. If anyone tries the recipe before me will you post the results. I would like to stay away from the bad stuff too. Hydro oil is in everythig it seems.

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I'm with Julie, don't use garlic salt, but tons of garlic powder. If anyone knows how to home make the powder, please share.

thanks Anne, I'm going to try it using 1/4 c. salt and one garlic bulb to see how it works.
I'm also going to dry a couple of garlic cloves and try to grind it into a powder. I'll let you know how that works.

I make celery salt and ginger salt too. Same idea as the garlic salt. The longer you let the flavors "marry", the better they are!

I am going to make both powder and salt with the garlic ...I just got my garlic from MaryJane ....IT IS BEAUTIFUL! And now about the ginger salt..... that sounds very interesting what do you use it in? I use a lot of ginger but not with salt... I want to preserve these flovors and I just got new salt ...hemalayin salt.
Okay how about the marry the flavors.... while in oven or mixing and setting.
