Try a rinse cycle with a really good dose of vinegar to kill the mold/bacteria. Also wipe the seal/gasket around the door with a vinegar soaked rag and I highly recommend leaving the door cracked between loads to let the air ciculate and dry out the washer. Hope that helps!!

I agree with Alee. I have a front loader and always leave the door open and so far no problems and I've had it a couple yrs. now.

Yup, the door cracked is the best advice AFTER an extra rinse cycle and wiping it down :)
We have always have had front loaders, there are hardly any top loaders here. Never had a problem but then again I always leave the door open just an inch or so

Great post. I have a top loader and have even bought a Tide product to "clean the washing machine". Mine smells like cat urine but the clothes don't. I thought maybe I was losing my mind!!!

Sara- you aren't losing your mind. Even top loaders get funky if the lid is left down and the right environment for bacteria and mold is there!

I just run a bleach load and it goes away. Also never shut the door when not in use. It can get funky!

Here's another suggestion-hydrogen peroxide. I have run the tub clean cycle and used hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach. I have used vinegar as well, but I like the peroxide better. It seems to kill any mold or bacteria in there. I also try to use Borax with every load.

Leave the door open til it dries. I found that works well.

Randomness: I wish the people in my apartment building would leave the lid up on the washer. It smells so nasty when they leave it down. And since I'm right across the hall, everytime I come home, I always check it to make sure it's up (unless there are clothes in it). At work, we have a front loading one & I always leave it open at the end of the day. I only switch laundry, I have never used it, but I would think they wipe it down at least once a day, considering how many loads go through in a day.

If u clean your washer you should use something environmentally safe and running another rise cycle in my opinion is a wast. I agree with Alee, but baking soda might work also. O yes and vinegar wont make your next load of clothes smell if u just wipe down like Alee said. My cat had a bladder problem and started to pee on everything before she died so I used the vinegar in the wash to get the stain and smell out. It worked perfect and never reeked of vinegar. lol I would pour a half gallon bottle of vinegar in the washer :/
