 Our frost-free hydrant broke last month - it's been dripping for a few months, and it finally gave way. That means no outside water except for field irrigation when that starts. I really need to get it fixed, and as long as that one is getting fixed, I thought I'd plan a couple of others and "upgrade" the water system. It's sort of a "dry" (ha, ha) subject, but does anybody have pumps/hydrants that they just LOVE or a water system/placement/sprinkling system, etc. that they think is just great? I was looking for ideas before I make the final decision...

| Hi Libbie, sorry cant help either. A guy just came from across the paddock, he was just mowing a 4 acre kiwifruit block and hit a water pipe, so needed some tools to tie it off. |

I don't have my copy of MJ's book handy, but didn't she mention buying a pump from a man who had planned to go out of business and the Y2k thing rejuvenated his company? I think she mentioned the name of the company, but am not sure. Sorry I'm not more help. Good luck!

I had forgotten about the hand pump! Silly me! I wonder if it'll work with municipal water? The water in these lines is culinary, since we are on a canal/flood irrigation system, so I'll have to check into it. I also want to buy a pump and some sort of "transfer" area where I can get my water from the open ditches into gated/sprinkler-ready, pressurized pipe...I realize this topic is pretty mundane, but, when you don't have outside water, those buckets get pretty darn heavy - and the thought of watering my gardens with a watering can?!?!?!? UGGGhhhh. I can hardly wrap my mind around that one!

I wonder if your irrigation water is different than ours..we don't have the open ditch thing going..I guess they switched over a few years before we moved here...we have one big thing where it comes from at the back corner of the property..and my husband had to re-do the plumbing last year for the sprinklers and animal waters in summer and for lots of spigots for attaching hoses for the garden. I would hate to be without it. I have done the hauling water in buckets to the garden thing in my lifetime (in CAlif not here) and it stinks!!!
My husband works for a plumbing supply store so he just does that sort of stuff...but if you want to ask him ( I would word it all wrong) I am sure he could help you figure a way (and he is into being frugal) just advice I mean...I am sure there are plumbing supply places way closer to you...in Richfield for sure. That would be too hard for you..hauling the water in buckets..especially THIS summer..right??

Jenny - I would LOVE to ask you/your husband about this one. You're right - the mere thought of lugging water buckets while being 7-9 months pregnant or with a newborn is making my back hurt just thinking about it! I think our irrigation IS different from yours - it comes right out of the Sevier river through an open canal system. One town right next to us has pressurized irrigation water, and that sounds so nice - I think that might be what you have, if you can run sprinklers and things off of it without a pump. Hooray!!! Today is the day that I'm getting a new, very basic water system - my husband took the day off work and is working with a contractor to not only replace my lone frost-free hydrant in the yard, but to add two more out where I eventually want my cows, chickens, sheep and outdoor shower (right next to the planned location of the wall tent!). These are, I admit, dream plans, but a girl's gotta dream, right? Anyway, in the short run, it means WATER WITHOUT HAULING!!!YAY!!!
