I planted "lima beans" this year. I watched the pods as they got bigger, and then suddenly one day they started drying up! I thought, well, darn it. Too bad, they're dead and gone. But the plant was still green....... Fast forward a few weeks. I went out there today and for the heck of it cracked open a pod, and I was shocked to see perfectly dried "butter beans", like you buy in the store..... :) tee hee. So I accidentally figured out how to grow my own dried limas/butter beans. How silly I feel. I shelled a whole "passle" of 'em!
Another goofy thing: I like to make tomato puree/sauce. I skin the tomatoes, dice them, cook them down, and put them through a food mill; then can the saucy part. Well, the other day I had a great big bowl of little Roma tomatoes and some others, and no time! I threw them all - skins, stems, everything - in my crock pot and turned it on high. They cooked in there a few hours, and then I dumped them all in the food mill and sauced them just fine! HAH! Maybe I will never skin another tomato. I know, I am such a silly farmgirl.

Hosanna, your post made me smile. I too, am figuring out the little things in my garden. What I thought were wax beans are black valentine beans. I had no idea. I also didn't know that I didn't have to shell the variety of peas I planted. That I could've froze them shell and all and they would've been fine. Also, out of necessity and time I stuck some whole tomatoes in the freezer so I wouldnt lose them to rot. Only to figure out they will keep just fine like that until I'm ready to can them! No more pressure to get it done, only pressure of running out of freezer space!

My husband throws his tomatoes all in a blender, blends them up and puts them in big jars ... 4 cups just enough to take out of the freezer in the winter for spaghetti sauce or chili! So quick and simple. No muss, no fuss
