Thought I would make some of those oranges you see in the fall and at Christmas covered with cloves. What kind of oranges and is there a correct way to make these? I know I will have to sell the car to pay for the whole cloves, but I guess they last a long time.

Alee, I LOVE the second link! It says you can keep them for years YAY!!
I am not even sure if whole cloves are expensive here, will have to check this out someday. Will be nice for Christmas too, OOOHHH the smell :)

These are not difficult at all. We have done them in the past and just used whatever oranges we can get.
We did not preserve them but they kept for the holidays anyway. I just covered the whole orange in cloves and put them in a bowl.
If you want to preserve them and don't mind doing the extra things then I would do them as suggested on the site

| We can get bulk cloves at the Amish stores here for pretty cheap, cause I make some of these each Christmas & instead of covering the whole orange, I made patterns across the orange. Looks festive! |

ooh, how beautiful! i had seen those somewhere, coulda sworn it was in country living magazine but maybe it was one of their books. so, for those who have made them before, do they smell nice, like fill the room with aroma? orange and clove is a wonderful mixture! you gals have me hankering for fall!

If you heat with a wood stove and put a pot or kettle on top to moistian the air, put orange peels and cloves in the water, your whole house will smell wonderful.

Elizabeth- one does help scent the air, but if you want a stronger fragrance, you should do several. May people make them into ornaments and if you REALLY want them to scent the air- put them in a stronger air flow pattern- like hanging by a heater vent so the hot air goes past it on it's way into the room, or over the sink, or in areas where people walk by a lot so the air movement from their passage will disperse the fragrance. I have seen them as center peices of wreaths (inside the curve or outside of it), as ornaments, in bowls on tables... The possibilities are endless!

I've always wanted to make some orange pomanders with cloves and these instructions and the bulk herb site makes this an inexpensive gift to make for the holidays as well as make my house smell yummy. Thanks so much for the info Alee

I made these years ago for a grandmother.
She loved it so much she kept it on the lampstand for MANY years even after it had shrunk and stopped smelling pretty.
I think she liked the sentiment then eventually forgot it was there.
Thanks for the preservation method!
I also have a source for bulk whole cloves, so that's not a problem. Look at mountainroseherbs.com They sell whole cloves 1 lb. at $10.75 |
