My DH was at the State Fair in Douglas, Wy and he got bit by a red ant. He immediately killed the little feller. After about 10 minutes, the bite site began to swell rapidly and eventually got so big that he had to go to the emergency room. His heart rate went really high and he got the shakes and sweats. He did not have trouble breathing, so they don't think it was an allergic reaction.
Do anyone know what kind of an ant would cause such a toxic reaction?

I agree, "fireant", evil creatures, I have known a few who have had those kind of reactions, gone to ER and were told "YES" it is an allergic reaction, they now carry epipens.

Just because he did not have trouble breathing does not mean it wasn't an allergic reaction. Allergys gradually get worse each time you are exposed, his reaction the next time he is bit by a fire ant may cause hives and swelling. A few of those nasty little things got me several years ago and those bites were horrible, worse that chiggers and then became infected. It was awful. Hope your hubby is doing much better, Carol
